I got a new LCD with a ribbon attached. The first time I only did the ribbon replacement and it was a waste of time as it wasn't perfect, some pixels still didnt work and some buttons didnt work or when they were pressed deformed the panel and made some pixels stop.
Now once this part part below was replaced, all my buttons worked and there was no weird problems. I had a local guy perform the work who had done it before. I bought the part from ebay vendor muehl.007 ad was titled "NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR BMW E53 E38 E39 X5 RADIO LCD DISPLAY SPEEDOMETER MID" US $36.99 and listed as 3 available and 41 sold. Bonus tip I found a inexpensive bluetooth adapter that just plugs into the back port of the MID. It has an amazing range and I can even connect in my house before going out to start the car.
