How to torque Axle Nut to 310!?

My torque wrench, as well as the loaner at AutoZone, only reach 250ft-lb and the E53 front axle nuts call for 310lbs.

How does one achieve that high a torque? Do I really need to go source a super duty torque wrench for this job? Or is there a "250 plus 1/4 turn" type magic trick to this? Or just torque to 250 and hit it with an impact gun?

Thanks!

I torque it to 250 and give it another good push afterward. I'm a pretty strong guy, and that's about all I've got. Bend in the ring on both sides and call it good 'til next time.

AM.

Thanks! That's what I'll do.

Got driver side done. Passenger side tomorrow. Waiting for a 35mm socket because the axle nuts on the replacement axles aren't 36mm. Overall it wasn't a terrible ordeal thus far. Hopefully Side B will be equally smooth!

You can do some math also. I used my digital scale some rope and a bit of math to tighten a Jesus bolt to 350 ft·lb.

I weigh about 180 so my body weight about 21" from center would do it.

To get more precise you can add a torque extension to your wrench. Snap on has an app to do the math for you.

"impact gun" means somewhere between 50 and 1000 ft·lb. Absolutely arbitrary. I've removed a lot of "hit with an impact" method nuts that took less than 80 ft·lb to remove. It'd be better to estimate with some body weight and be close than use an impact and literally have no clue whatsoever. That said it's a fine place to start off as that's how I get mine started.

My small impact has max torque of 250 ft·lb so I can max that tool out and then take a 20-24" breaker bar and rest most of my weight.

Precise torque can be established as I did installing a Jesus bolt above. 132 lb at 32" is 350 ft·lb. That amount of precision is not needed for an axle bolt.

(They are initially installed with TTA method but can't reinstall that way so a torque value was established using historical values of similar fasteners)

It's always the sailors with a collection of rope (sorry line) plus block and tackle.

But then again if we had marines on here everything would be in crayon.

Fun dig. I can appreciate a good burn. I use my rescue tackle for lots of things. Notably when I want to bring such as my 250# washing machine up to my second floor apartment or gently lower a 120# toilet precisely onto the flange bolt.

The hardware shown there is about $400 and if you had enough friends to help pull could lift my X5 off the ground.

Here I'm using to pull a head over to it's spot on a block. The exhaust manifold was hooked up and it took maybe hundred pounds of force to bend the exhaust.

I didn't want to risk pulling the car off it's stands so I rigged up a giant adjustable wrench into the tow hook notice how it doesn't touch the bumper that worked perfectly.

I guess it's better than EOD math...

Plenty plus more equals enough

I used to have some of the same stuff from the H.A.L. kit, but the Big Green Weenie now has troops whose only gig is to account for stuff...
