Hah! On the e61 5er to do the xfer car fluid you have to drop the exhaust and heat shielding. Beautiful design.

E90 not different. I just changed the whole TC but before I was hoping was just stripped transfer case actuator gear so I pulled the motor. I didn’t want to first remove the exhaust and shield so I just bent the shield to fit the motor out.

It will all depend on the ceiling height in your new house. If you end up like mine with a room above it you may not have the height needed for a full size lift. I can easily make do with the QuickJack for everything I am doing on my garage. Words of wisdom though, once you have the ability to go under it at the drop of a hat, you will find more things that need to be addressed.

After my last 2 projects having the front splash shield and reinforcement plate off, I am seeing signs of an oil leak now and already prepping for my next project. OFHG and CCV to rule out the leak initiating from above.

Praying to the Bavarian Gods that is is not the dreaded 3.0L oil pan gasket.

The pressure bleeder is an absolute must for a simple flushing of the brake fluid from an old system.

The one thing that petrifies me is bleeding the brakes the old pump up and push out with the brake pedal. I know my master cylinder is now 16 years old and has never seen the bottom 70% of travel so shoving the pedal down into the abyss of contaminates could cause some seal damage.

Not to mention the bore is probably a lot tighter down there after 16 years of movement at the top 30%. I have read some horror stories after a simple brake bleed turning into master cylinder and brake booster failures.

Very interesting situation you describe there. My master cylinder piston got full range work out when my rear brake line split open. Fortunately I was able add enough on my 160 mile drive home to keep air out of the system. I used the p. B. To bleed but didn’t need to use the scanner to run the abs.

My Foxwell NT-510 showed up today and plugged it in and took all of 3 minutes to reset the clutches in the transfer case and then clear the code worn oil code.

On the Foxwell NT-510 I took these steps:
  • Plugged in the Foxwell NT-510 into the OBDII port and let it boot up.
  • Turned on ignition key to position 2
  • Selected the BMW icon
  • Chose automatic VIN identification
  • Selected Service
  • Selected VTG
  • Selected Oil Change
  • Prompted me through the reset procedure. (you could hear the transfer case clutches engaging and releasing and then a confirmation of successfuly reset adaptations)
  • Backed out to Modules
  • Selected VTG transfer case
  • Read codes
  • Found the worn oil code
  • Backed out to clear codes and cleared
  • Reinitialized read codes and 0 codes found.
  • Backed all the way back out to start menu
Done!

So much easier than laptop solution. I have no clutches in my TC so I could t confirm the 510 would get in there but I was 98% sure. Very happy I was correct.

Thank you so much for your advice Andrew. I have INPA, NCS Expert, Tool 32, WinKFP, etc and PA Soft 1.4 and these software tools will not reset the transfer case adaptations, only possible with ISTA or DIS and I didn't have those (ISTA won't work on Windows XP OS and that's what I have installed on my BMW laptop).

The Foxwell made it so much easier than spending hours installing ISTA on another laptop and making it work. Thanks again for your advice!

Way to go, OB - well done!

When I finally got this done (with DISv44) it was a real hoot to hear the busy little actuator working away.. confirmed it was all good.

In the DIS process, the oil wear adaptations are cleared as part of the "job", right after the clutch actuations etc. - you're asked to confirm that the registers have been returned to zero. Not sure if this also clears the oil wear error code (54C6) as mine wasn't set (at 200,000kms).

But the Foxwell sounds WAY easier than screwing with multiple VMs...

Foxwell 520 was how I reset the adaptations and fluid wear code after TC fluid change as well. Sorry, would have confirmed earlier, didn't realize it was in question the foxwell could do it.

That was the main push for me to get foxwell.
