The only thing in the prior owner's records is "pilot mod to CCV" whatever that means. Does not use oil, no change on stick after about 750mi since the last change. What is this CCV delete thing?

pilot mod to CCV sounds like the CCV delete I did. It was posted many years ago by C90. Only thing I did differently is add a catch can to the mod. Collects some blow by which gets dumped back into the oil filler every so often instead of getting sucked into the intake to get burned off. Plenty of folks say it shouldn't work, but it does. It cut my oil usage way down. I don't use more than a quart in 5000 miles. Then it is time for an oil change. And contrary to what lots of people say, it doesn't raise the vacuum level in the crankcase. I put a hole in a oil filler cap and plugged a vacuum line into it. I get less than 1psi vacuum. I have 393,000 miles on it.

Even if the CCV is still in place, check to see if the hoses are all still connected to where they are supposed to. Some people leave the CCV in place when they do the delete. The hoses then don't run to the CCV any more.

I installed a cold weather CCV on mine. Pictures are posted here.
