Help Diagnose - CCV Problem?
There appears to be no oil mixed in the coolant when I removed the radiator cap. History- car has a significant maintenance history, but was short tripped for years. The disa valve, oil dipstick seal & oil separator hose was replaced along with a full cooling system refresh 3k miles ago in late '25. No current codes other than a recent intermittent vacuum issue- P0441 8F tank leak diagnoses with DTML / FA Function check. These codes were cleared recently & did not return. Mechanics notes on invoice from '25- "Engine breather system full of oil. The breather drain in the dipstick tube is fully blocked. Remove dipstick tube, clear drain, replace dipstick oring. Replace cyclone valve, damaged vacuum cap at rear of cylinder head, replace all crankcase breather system hoses & pipes." "Replace Disa valve & miscellaneous vacuum hoses." On the invoice, I only see one CCV related hose replacement the "oil separator hose" Rein 11157532628. How do I diagnose a CCV problem? Is this what I should suspect? What else should I look at?

There are pages and pages of info on here about the CCV, maybe have a look at some of that to start. Short trips can be a problem even with the CCV working. CCV stands for CLOSED Crankcase Ventilation so no fresh air gets brought in to help carry away moisture, plus the cyclone is more efficient at keeping the moisture in than it is for the oil.

One thing I was told is try to remove the oil fill cap while idling. If there’s strong vacuum holding it on then there’s a CCV issue. The cyclone unit might be slugged up internally.
Pretty sure mine needs replacement due to high crankcase vacuum and a whooshing noise when I shut it off. I have a new one (Febi) but it looks like such a PITA to replace that I’ve put off doing it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

E53 CCV testing
Welcome to the site. Mine had the same white smoke at start up when I bought it. It went away slowly. It disappeared after a cold climate CCV kit installation. CCVs are available in hot or cold formats. I went with a cold CCV to keep the fumes hot for better separation. Cold weather CCV basically has foam wrapped around it. I also went to a 5/40 weight oil. It's hot here. I may go back to 5/30 after all the maintenance done. The goo is moister in the oil. It needs to run to burn it off. If the thermostat is old, replace it. It will help burn off moister. CCV replacement.

Thanks for the comments.
I've read through dozens of threads and watched 10 videos, trying to avoid the "parts cannon" approach to repairs. Can I be pretty certain that this is a CCV problem or should I look at other possibilities? Is it okay to drive, or should I park it until its sorted out? I've only noticed the smoke once, yesterday, so hopefully I'm catching this problem before any major damage accurs.

I would say drive it! The last owner probably didn't drive it enough. How old is the oil? You probably have high humidity there. How many miles are on it? Are there any codes present? BMW codes. ODBII scanners don't read some deep operational codes.

I've had the e53 for 4 months & put some long 1-3 hour drives on her. When I bought her, the oil visible from the cap was sludgy, & thick yellow. I changed the oil right away. Now it's just a thin yellow coat. We have driven her 2k miles since then. 126k miles total.
I'm asking because the smoke was concerning - I thought it was a blown HG at firstsight.... A couple of months ago I had a couple of emissions codes, replaced gas cap & the vapor canister purge valve. These codes cleared. More recently, Codes that have been present (BM700 BMW scanner) recently are: intermittent vacuum issue- P0441 8F tank leak diagnoses with DTML / FA Function check. These codes were cleared recently & did not return - yet. I suspect there is a small leak in one of the vacuum hoses. I have BMW Standard tools on my laptop... haven't run ISTA yet to check otherwise- is there a way to test for CCV issues in ISTA? Could the emissions codes be related to the smoke?

How many miles on the odometer?
- Check for combustion gas in coolant. - I personally did the "BavarianE39 CCV mod" some 10 years ago, around 2016. You can find details in this forum. Never look back. Factory CCV system is very troublesome. The CCV mod reduced my oil consumption down to almost zero.

126k miles on odometer.
I drove the x5 all day today. No visible smoke or other symptoms.

The X5 is probably fine. I would expect a little white smoke on morning start ups. Mine did for a while until I really drove it daily or hard. Good oil and maintenance will keep it running good.
What color is it? Do you have any pics to post. The pics have to be small though.
