I was in the same boat as you...just drive as many variations as you can. Keep in mind that in addition to slight styling updates, the 2004 has slightly more hp, gets better mileage and I believe is the first year that has the VANOs and Xdrive (I hope that is, right..I understand that forum members with less than 500 posts get summarily executed for spreading mis-information, just a heads up).

However, the value curve is likely in a 2003 with less than 45,000 miles and a CPO or extended warranty. I hear the 2003 has lots of improvements (like better window actuators and A/C issues, as mentioned above). The best advice you have gotten from the other posts regards warranty--make certain you are either in warranty, have a CPO, or the car qualifies for an extended warranty (no chips or mods). As far as Sport vs non, personal preference...the sport seats and ride is pretty hard after 300 miles, but the handling is great. And if you buy private party or non-CPO, have a BMW dealer do a pre-inspection...it's rudimentary but gives you some clout if you get the run around later on.. Have fun...I looked hard at the RR Sport but I'm glad I went BMW.

I'll echo what the others have said about CPO. You won't regret it if you go CPO. Also can agree that the '01's have plenty of little nickel and dime stuff wrong with them, which is irritating sometimes.

I can also say that I've had good relations with my Car Max Max Care warranty, after a very rocky start with them. I just had my local BMW dealer replace a front control arm, fan belt, radiator hose and do an alignment and the grand total for that work (@ $115 per hour) was $1100. That is with my Service Advisor giving me a nice hookup on the labor hours, too. I pay $75 and my warranty covers the rest.

Unless you wipe with Ben Franklin, it ain't no fun to see the bill once the X has been in the shop.

Buy a CPO vehicle if you can. You won't be sorry. Nav. is great, and so are all the extras that come w/the sport pkg. Drive before you buy, and decide for yourself. This is a great forum for info. and the people are great, so learn what you can before plunking down your $.

Just a few things that have been wrong with my 01 4.4 sport (I bought it last May with 30,000 miles):

-Replaced two window regulators
-Replaced two door lock actuators
-Fuel gauge shows 1/2 tank after filling up (takes driving 60 miles to correct itself each time)
-4 pixel strips in dash display are out
-Telescoping steering wheel doesn't move forward and back
-Driver's side side-mirror doesn't move left to right

I know there are a few more things, but I can't remember them off the top of my head!!

Unfortunately, that would only apply to you if you purchase your car through CarMax.
