I could never dream of doing that with anything other than winter tires.
- The Michelin Diamaris summer performance tires is no good in snow, several members have already found out the bad way... Go get a dedicated winter setup and it'll be night & day difference.

But good to know that everyone is okay, the X took a good hit but still retained it's form.

Pirelli Scorpion ice and snow

I put the Pirelli's on the stock 18" rims and will buy some 19's with summer tires for the rest of the year.

THey are AMAZINGLY grippy. Night and day difference over the "all season" tires.

Sorry about the X, good luck.

LeMansX5 - ive considered the dunlops or the pirelli's scorpion..u have experience between the two? also what type of wheels are u using on your dunlops?
I have not used the Pirrelli scorpion. I like the Dunlop Wintersport. I have done 60mph on 6" of snow on highway, they hold like teeth. I use 18" wheels for my winter setup

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad there were no injuries.

No matter how good the ABS system is it can not make more stopping power than is available from the tires. With the Diamaris on the X5 under those road conditions you might as well have had snow boards on. As everyone else has posted already, you need to get a winter tire setup.

I say this so often that even I am tired of hearing myself say it.

X5's on 19's or above (even 18's without winter tires), in the snow, regardless of tires, are unstable. I'm sure a lot of you will say that your x with 19's is fine, but there are too many of these stories to not take the risk seriously. After I slid down a hill and almost clipped a school bus I was convinced... I hope other realize it too, it would be a shame for something to happen and someone get hurt.

Good luck with your repairs.... sorry about the accident.

An update guys.
Well my X is sick as the body shop man told me.
I've wrecked the suspension, probably through hitting the curb whilst having full left lock on. You can see where the wheel has ploughed up into the wheel arch when you're close up. I need two new alloys and although the body work in the pics doesn't look too bad, it is pretty mashed with the main dings to the front wing and bonnet and working down the driver door and passenger door. The headlamp is smashed too.

Thanks for the advice on tyres and such. It is probably obvious to you guys abroad, but here in the UK we don't generally suffer much from snow and swapping to a winter setup is not the norm. I'll know next time.

Now all I have to do is go and make friends with the local fund raising guys that put the shelter up. One has already kindly returned my wing mirror.

i am selling my 18's w/ scorpions and putting the stock 17's back on...i dont have the sport and imo my X rides noticeably better and smoother with the stick 17's than the sport 18's - and my suspension keeps getting screwed up and taking a beating - several mechanics ive spoken too said if i plan on keeping the truck to put the 17's back the suspension is taking a beating (prob bc the way i drive) bc i dont have the sport suspension so the truck isnt made for the sport size wheels/tires....i used to have 20's and that probly contributed to destroying the suspension and ride of my X
