Must check this, but it doesn't really sound like a license plate/frame..

I spent about an hour cobbling together pics/fixes from other, more seasoned X5 owners on here.. If you want to save an hour, PM me with your email address and I'll send it over

Thanks,
Chris

yup

Yah, I've addressed this too... I actually used some GOOP sealant between the bottom of my license-plate frame and the actual license plate. The particular frame has only two mounting points on the top which made it rattle like crazy against the actual plate. The sealant it weather proof and should scrape off easily if I ever need to remove it from the license plate....

I too have had a rattle noise from the back of the X. One thing I tried was to lower the backseat armrest and would you know, the noise seems to be gone. Something about the leather in the crack between the two seat backs rubbing together makes noise.

Something else to try if the bump stops don't help

I'll add that to the list

Thanks,

I had rattling in the hatch areas before. Dealer fixed it under warranty. They said they lubed all the parts/"joints" because they're too dry. After that, all the rattling noise is gone.

the actuator for the rear hatch is usually the culprit, if it is still under warranty bring it back to the dealer, there are certain production ranges which had bad actuators as well as bullitens regarding replacement.

Took mine back to the dealer

I took mine back to the dealer and he "fixed it".

Problem is that within about a month the noise is back.

How can BMW not know how to design a tail gate so it does not rattle?

My rattle fix

I had the same type of rattle described in this forum--from the rear right area. I played with the spare tire, jack, tools etc. with no improvement. I examined the ski passthrough and found the door to be rattleable. I put a styrofoam block between the passthrough door and ski bag and that solved the problem! No more rattle.

Hey Alan,

Very interesting that you mention that.. In my 2 hour quest to quiet down the rattling, I noticed that ski passthrough latch too.. Didn't put anything in there, but I will to see if the final rattling can be stopped.

I also found out that the channel bumper stop fix doesn't apply to the 06's as they have spring mounted stops for the hatch - adding a felt pad wouldn't help.

Also, the one or two bumpers right next to the latch on the hatch portion aren't there at all - might have something to do with the self-latching feature.

BMW has clearly spent a lot of time to install bumpers and rubber pads all over the place on the back of the X - an 'A' for effort, but about a 'B-' for success.. Hopefully via X5World, we can figure these out together.

I'll post back if the new 'ski-passthrough' fix is successful.

Thanks,
Chris
