Problem with IPOD install . . .
Hi All,
I’m installing the BMW IPod upgrade kit in my X5. All was going well until I plugged the battery back in—now the engine check light is on and the OBC (On-Board Computer) MID (Multi-information Display) unit does not illuminate (although I can control the radio tuner and volume from the steering wheel). I’ve reviewed all the wiring and the positions look right. The BMW instructions mislabeled the color coding of one wire (PersonaNonGrata found the same problem here. The wire in position 9 was listed as White/Red but mine was White/Yellow. Nevertheless, the position seemed right and all the other wire colors match as listed). Any suggestions for further troubleshooting? I’m at a loss because everything went according to plan and I’ve given the install the once-over and can’t find any obvious problems. Best Regards, Nick |

I went over the install again and i could not find an obvious problem. The MID is still out cold and the check engine light is on.
Any ideas anyone? |

What happens if you uninstall it and get everything back to the way it was prior to your starting the project?

The problem is I'll have to cut up the new harness, but it's looking more and more like I have no choice . . .

Here's a question:
Are there different install instructions for the IPOD adaptor
P/N #65 11 0 409 343 then their are for: P/N #65 11 0 392 134 Anyone have any idea what the differnece between the two P/N's are? |

Current status . . .
Well, the check light issue is not a problem any more--perhaps it went off because I disconnected the battery and never ran it for a few moments after reconnecting it.
The Multi-information Display even came to life--and then died upon attempting to reset the clock. And it was weird too—despite pushing the clock button, the MID would not show the clock menu. So, it could be something as simple as a lose wire (although I doubt it), or it could be something altogether different. Count me as unimpressed with the whole BWM iPod adaptor experience. The after-market adaptor system that allows one to hook up their iPod though the CD changer wiring in the trunk of the car and route the connector wire into the center console sounds like a much better thought-out deal then what I’ve had to face the past few days . . . |

Personally, I'm a fan of the Dension IceLink Plus. Sorry to hear about your problems.

Hmmm. Very strange problem there. This is perhaps a fruitless suggestion but have you checked all fuses, including the set in the cargo area? I would double check those. If I recall correctly, I had a problem with the MID and the radio not functioning after my installation. It turned out I had blown a fuse.
Also, re-check your connections and pay particular attention to the metal tabs that the plugs are held in by. Those darned connectors were a PITA to get unconnected and reconnected. Let us know how it goes.

Update
Well, here's the story now . . . the MID is still out, but when the car is started, the radio and CD player work for a few minutes, and then cut out.
I wasn’t able to find any blown fuses. I’m going to concede defeat and take it it to the dealer—this is beyond weird. |
