how would i know if my sensor's not working without using dis?... if i remove the sensors and used a voltage tester at the socket, would i get a signal from it upon starting the car?

i removed the sensors and there's current in the sockets. so i guess it's the sensors? now how would i know if the sensors are working?

does the ecu needs programming when changing new sensors?

No need to encode the ECU if just replace the level sensor. You may need to use the DIS or code reader to diagnose the error code to find which one is dead. For X5 with xenon lights and 4.4i version, there are two level sensors on rear suspension, one on each side, and one on the front right side (one on the front left side too if equipped with adjustable height suspension). After replacement of level sensor, you may need to encode the air supply control unit.

Mine was reset with the DIS, I checked out the left rear sensor and the arm was all seized as well. Im going to replace this sensor as well and then i'll see if it fixes everything. Will update later.

i justhad this today, first started with the check rear and tail, then check brake light...then the dreaded rear sup inact, thee was no change in ride height or ride quality, checked all fuses and they seemed fine ...but msg was still there. however on removing the rear light assembly there was a hole in the metal of the contacts for the bulb, so after a bit of soldering and filing, all lights now working and the suspension message is gone...i guess various electrical glitches can cause this code to be thrown, i also found out that the faulty contacts from the brake light have caused a " check low beam message to come up. so once again thanks guys as these threads have proved invaluable!!!

driving around i seem to see loads of x5's with blown tail/brake lights and i kinda thot its a little niche market, so one could start a side biz fixing these (meaning Me..lol)
