SelfLevel SUSP.INACT warning appears...why?

I just got this error yesterday. It was on all day. I think I know whatmay have caused it. Went to costco, and I dropped a case of water in the back. Maybe that broke something? In any event, how likely is it that the error will self correct itself? I don't want to drop $5k on the car.

I would hope not.

From what I've seen, the rear self leveling suspension could be anything --fuses, the leveling sensors, etc. I managed to squeeze mine in under warranty, they checked for 'pinched air hoses and water in the spare tire well'. Ended up getting a new compressor for it, haven't seen the warning since then.

How much was the compressor installed?

Ya if a case of water broke it, I'd be mighty peeved! At least if it was a case of beer, I could get some enjoyment out of the process.

Not sure on the exact cost, my awesome service advisor got it covered under waranty as a good will repair. The total billed to BMW NA including front brake replacement was a tad under $2,000... I would guess about $800 or so?

Well, I cleaned my MAF sensor today, to get rid of my emissions light. So I disconnected the battery, so big deal. Reconnected, and the emissions light is gone, thank god, however the SELF LEVELLING INACTIVE warning is now on. The car is level, and it wasn't on prior to the disconnect. Anyone had similar?

I have driven it, turned it off, turned it on, dc the battery again and it's still the same. It is very annoying. Car rides the same, feels the same too.

Been reading all posts related to this suspension fault issue but can't seem to find one similar to mine.

GT1 reading says that the voltage reading on my right rear is something like 0.64 while the one on the left is 4.60.

The mechs switched sensors and still the one on the right has a low voltage and sometimes 0 reading.

Any ideas?

My 2001 X5 is self leveling in the rear only,which i just found out myself yesterday by my mechanic.

That means you only have to pay for compressor and rear shocks if stuff goes bad.....

The wiring/pins condition/continuity/ohms and output voltage from the module should be checked. (but not all mechanics are at home with tracking down electrical problems)

Hi Weasel! So should I assume that there is nothing wrong with the sensor? I was allowed to watch them work on it in the service area and they were switching sensors from right to left and vice versa. Problem always appears to be on the right (low voltage reading).

They were working overtime to try and trace the problem. I'll find out in the morning.
