in your x5, there is a similar workaround, if you have the mid-console computer. when you park, you disable the engine with a code. when you come back to the car, even though you rotate the key to position 3 (whichever is for ignition), the engine won't start until you enter the code. however, once you enter the code, the engine starts right away without the need for you to rotate the key again.
OK, now I'm really confused. I understand you can create a code so nobody can start the car w/out it, but what do you mean the car will start without turning the key? So, if I set this up correctly, if I just insert the key it will start???

As my X5 is today, I just turn the key and let it go...it will crank until it starts. Are you all saying I can just "push a button" and it will start? Someone please clear this up for idiots like me that can't seem to comprehend this thread.

Great! Almost there.

After you turn your key with the engine disabled, the crank signal will be sent but because the code is turned on....nothing happens. But the crank signal is still being sent (in my car I have ~5-10 seconds). So if you punch in your code while this crank signal is still being sent, as you hit the final button on your mid, the engine will start.

If you wait to long, the crank signal stops. Type the code quickly...or you can start by using an easy number to type like 1111 if you have slow fingers.

Do you Navi or not (I don't).

It's more of a hack....but I've gotten used to it and always start my car this way now.

I have a 2003 X5 4.4i With the Nav and this auto start works great on my vehicle. I think the secret is the speed in which you type in the code. I only had about 4 seconds from the time I turned the key to position 3 tell I was done entering the code. Thanks for the post.

Exactly...how is this "easier"??? Sounds like a security feature more than "1-button" starting. Let's see, not only do I have to turn the key, but in addition I have to enter a code?? That would get old REAL fast.

I don't think anyone said it was easier, just cooler, especially if you use the security code anyhow...

Yes definitely not easier. X5Jay is on the money...this is only if you already use the immobilzer, instead of putting in code and then turning the key, you change the order up.

Does anyone have emergency deactivating procedure, since I just got into a situation when the car won't start.
