New member 2002 X5 5 speed Sport

Just stumbled upon this site.

I have a 2002 3.0 5speed X5 sport grey/green/tan leather all options except nav and parktronic purchased 2 yrs ago with 36k now has 55k and THANK GOD is covered by CPO.

I am the second owner and so far the following parts have been replaced:

A/C Control unit at 37k - CPO
Stereo control panel 41k - CPO
Water leaking entering passenger compartment at foot pedals and passenger footwell - Replaced sunroof cassette 43k - CPO
Water still leaking in heavy rains. BMW replaced the windshield and seals at 46k - CPO
Battery replaced at 46k - my $$
Bushings, baljoints and control arms replaced (not covered with CPO) at 46k - my $$
Engine wiring harness replaced at 49k - CPO
Alternator replaced at 50k - CPO
A/C component replaced at 54k (common failure item) - CPO

Are these common "failures" on x5's? or is 02 a lemon year?

I am coming up to my 60k service. The dealer quoted me $800. Based on what I have read here I am assuming I will need CV boots too. Can someone give me the dealer price on replacing cv boots? My CPO runs out this coming February. Anything specific I should look to have replaced before my CPO ends?

Also anyone have a beige "old style" cargo cover they want to sell? The one I have has stains and a tear.

Thanks in Advance!

Andrew

Yes, my 2002 X5 5-speed has had similar problems... I've even had an engine rebuild at 52k miles, (needed new piston rings and gaskets) In addition to your problems, I have had the ignitor for both xenon lights go bad (one replaced under original warranty, the other CPO would not cover) I have not had problems with the alternator or battery yet though and have minimal problems with water leaking.. you'll also need new belts (ie. a/c, serpentine etc)

My CV boots tore at 68k miles and I had the clutch done at 52k miles since the tranny had to come out anyway for the engine rebuild.. CV boots are not covered under CPO... I paid $560 at an independent mechanic for the CV boots job.. If you wait until the clutch starts slipping before you replace it, you'll have to replace the dual mass flywheel as well, which is $$$..

I'd forego the $800 60k mile inspection 2 from the dealer and get this done at an independent mechanic... Basically all it entails is: oil change, new fuel filter, and cabin filter.. Good luck with your car, I'm getting rid of mine before the CPO is up...

Kendall wow and I thought mine was bad....

Yes I did have the serpentine belt replaced along with the A/C belts when they replaced the alternator.

I have 55k on my X and the clutch pick up being so funky compared to my 911/miata/308 I am wondering if I would notice the clutch slipping. Any clues to how I would notice? How much should I expect to pay for the clutch replacement? Is at 55k my X on borrowed time as far as the clutch is concerned? Engine rebuild at 52k? Can I ask what caused the need for a rebuild? I thought the engine was the only bullet proof part of the X? UGH

Will not doing the 60k void my CPO?

What do you think about Warranty Direct? I am thinking if I keep the X a third party extended warranty might not be a bad idea.

Thanks again for the advice.

A clutch replacement w/ Dual Mass flywheel will run about $1600-1900 or so at an independent mechanic.. dealer quoted me $1300 for parts alone.. they charge $400 for the clutch kit, $850 or so for the flywheel..

The engine was burning excessive oil, ~ 400 miles per quart by the time I took it to my dealer and complained loudly enough for them to do a leakdown test... When this test was done they found one of the exhaust manifolds stuck open and not enough compression in most of the cylinders... The mechanic at the dealer said could be a cause of not changing the oil enough.. (looked at service history and long and behold, first oil change by prior owner was done at 17k miles !!! ) another mechanic said, only cause would be, someone took out the air filter or incorrrectly installed an aftermarket one and ran the car causing particles to get in the engine causing the piston rings and gaskets to go bad..

Doing the 60k miles service won't void your warranty, but you should make sure your mechanic uses OEM BMW parts and BMW 5-30w synthetic oil you get from the dealer..

FerrariGuy,
Are you certain your clutch is going/"shot"?
These manual trans cars have a Clutch Delay Valve
and that gives the feel of "slop" and "first day driving
a stick" action. The prev. owner could have hammered
it, and thus your clutch is going, but ours works fine
at nearly 60k miles and almost 6 years.

Insp.: I'd rec'd getting "something done", by an Indie,
and save your records, so the Stlr can't say you bypassed
the Insp. and thus, your CPO is void. As Kendall suggested,
an oil change and "look around" by your indie mechanic,
with those actions noted on your bill.

I have not had the plethora of problems you listed, on our
'01, but I keep my fingers crossed. Welcome to the Board
and GL,
mD

David / Kendall

To be honest I do not think my clutch take up is any different from when I took delivery of the X two years ago with 36k on it. So I think it might be ok. I was wondering what the life expectancy of a X clutch is?
David have you replaced your CV boots? Water pump? From my readings I gather these are going to go next on my X.

Kendall thanks for the clutch pricing and "worse case scenario pricing" it helps me plan ahead.

Even with all the problems I still like the car. After my first out of pocket $1400. for new bushings, ball joints and control arms at 40K I went on Craigslist and bought a 89,000 mile 1 owner 93 miata for $1200. and have been using the miata to commute to work 70 miles round trip a day.
The miata has not cost me anything but $20. oil changes and it now has 110,000 miles. NOT a dime. I use the X only when I need to take my daughter and partner out at the same time. Otherwise it sits in the driveway. I try to run the car once a month on a short trip (40 miles) otherwise I have not used the X regularly in over a year.

FerrariGuy,
-Clutch life: very little info/history recorded as the 5 spds were so rare.
One poster had a "squeak" in pedal on engagement, (which I also have on occasion),
and he had some seriousazz clutch work done under warr., but that was a long time ago,
from memory. I would think that if the X's clutch wasn't beat on, it should go 100k, but
that's a guess.
-I'm still on orig CV boots and they look "ok" when I slide under for viewing; a look on a
lift may tell me more, when I get an Indie oil change and "insp" soon,
(to keep Warr. Direct off my fanny that I didn't "do" Insp. II).
I did have the water pump R&R'd at about 48k miles under the orig warr. You might have
an Indie check/R&R the water pump, belt check and careful inspection of coolant hoses
and coolant res. jug: they are all suspect and cheap azz oem parts; thus the weak links.
No window reg problems nor the litany of other failings...lucky so far.
-If you drive it so infrequently, I'd rec'd a Battery Tender hooked up to the terminals under
the hood, to keep the batt. breathing.
-I hear you on your Miata, but we/most of us are addicted to the X and/or BMWs and
understand they bring their own quirks, lol!

This is a great board for opins, rec'ds and info...let's see some pics of your stable; we have
some lucky Ferrari owners here, too and a wide assortment of fineazz rides.

David thanks again.

Here are pictures of my Ferrari 1978 308 GT4.
It is completely original with 16,000 documented miles and records going back to original purchase, original window sticker, keys, clock tag, paint, interior. It won best 2+2 at Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach 2005 (lawn photos)

Here are pictures of my Porsche

It's a 1978 Porsche 911SC non-sunroof Coupe. It was originally purchased by Ford Germany and was a motorpool car for Ford to run tests on. A exec at Ford bought it and used it as his personal car until 1982. In 1982 another exec at Ford Germany bought the car and converted it into a German Auto Club Rally car. He imported the car thru Ford Channels in 1988 and I bought it from him in 2002. The car has 115k (about 70,000 miles)
