Running boards a useful addition?
Are the running boards wide enough to stand on for these functions? I would like to hear opinions on how you all like your running boards.

I think many people added them for the looks more than for the functionality. However, for washing/detailing they are great.
Some complain that their pants get dirty when getting in and out of the car but I don't really have this problem. For me, I give them 5 stars for looks. Maybe only 4 stars for functionality since I step over them more than I step on them. YMMV. Last edited by ncx; 05-30-2007 at 02:32 PM. |

Although they are functional and you can stand on them, I never use mine. I have somewhat gotten used to stepping over them so my leg doesn't hit the running board. Some members *X5Jay cough*, would have a heart attack just from the suggestion of actually stepping on them.

I have the running boards on my X5. I like them because they add a certain look to it, and also they come in handy when I am washing the truck or trying to do something on the roof.
I would say they are worth it! BTW tell us more about your X, year, color, ect.

My X% 4.8 came with the running boards. I have no use for them. I step around them, get my trouser leg dirty from them (particularly in the winter with the slush). and can't seem to remember to stand on them when I use the Thule box. Otoh my mother likes them to get into the vehicle, although lowering the suspension helps her more.
I would not have paid to have the running boards. John

I think that you will find the runningboards useful for the reasons that you posted - extra height to get to your roof rack and for detailing the roof. You will be one of the few forum members that actually gets running boards for what they are intended rather than cosmetic reasons

I agree with the posters above re: improved looks over functionality.
I wash/detail my X regularly, and never step on the running boards, so I can't comment on their usefulness in this regard; however, many folks stand on them while washing/detailing the roof with no problems. I've found that you do have to be careful when they are dirty/wet/covered with snow/road salt not to get your trousers dirty, but it's easy just to step over the running boards to avoid this problem. I've got TiAg, too, and I think they look great. More pics here.

Everything said above seems to be fairly conclusive. And I will vouch for the necessity of an awkward step when exiting the X.
Any suggestions on washing the running boards? Mine have always been slightly dirty since getting the X but seem difficult to clean thoroughly due to the studs. |
