It is more or less correct and we do a lot of that here(eliminating the rear box)to tdis and Hdis, and then we just weld on to a stainless steel pipe the tip of the customers choice. Its not the turbocharger that provides the silencing, its the Kat and the middle silencer that come after it!Most of us with X5s want to maintain the oem look and unfortunately if it means buying the 4.4/4.6/4.8 silencers just to have the oem tips,so be it!Plus,on a 3.0d without a backbox, you get a lot of soot!

Ok "Dieselheads".The 4.8 mufflers arrived today.Going on a short holiday and will start working on them as soon as possible(I am tired of the jokes directed at my X5,that BMW forgot to put exhausts on it,that its an Electric powered X5.....and so on!).
Just for the record, those tips are really nice and the "magnet" doesnt stick to it as someone said on this site!!The pipe diametre is 2.5" (6.35cms).Watch this space!!!!!!!
Actually,I am going to submit an article with full installation pictures so you can all see and be able to do it as well.

Thanks guys this has been a very useful thread.

Would be interested to see how much smoke comes out and whether you notice more of a diesel smell around the car than normal. When i accelerate I always leave a decent amount of smoke behind, so I would hate to see what it's like out of pipes directly exposed?

My understanding was all diesel cars have the Exhausts hidden, audi's mercs etc I have never seen a diesel with the pipes exposed.

I have an '03 3.0 Diesel and it has a characteristic strong smell as all Bmw diesels do,which is annoying!
However, hardly any smoke comes out of mine and mine has a Hartge in-line Module(+40 bhp!...+80nm!).Generally,when Diesels smoke more than usuals, its a clogged air-filter that is the culprit!
It may be possible that it will smoke more with the the pipes exposed but I will be the first to admit ,when I complete my installation!

I also thought that all Diesel cars have their exhaust tips hidden or exposed but pointing down, but Donegal TDi will disagree with us!......

Hi Demondali,
You can only order your 4.8 oem rear silencers thru a Bmw dealer(call BMW GB and ask them for the dealer in Nottingham.I got mine from a Bmw dealer here in Portugal because ,somehow, its cheaper to buy in Euros??????Mine cost me with 20% trade discount ,685 euros(around 485 gbpounds).Price to the public is 857 euros(around 658 Gbpounds).Dont know the price in the Uk but I believe it to be more expensive. The part nos. you want are B18.10.7.529.453 and B18.10.7.529.454.
You must find a competent exhaust place to fit them!To start with, the pipe diametre of the 3.0d is 51mm,whilst the 4.8 is 60mm(2.34").You will need to cut both systems and either weld them or install proper connectors for easy removal afterwards.I am also ,for my own perusal, going to open up both systems because I suspect that the 4.8 is a restrictive silencer and I willn therefore have to alter the internals! So,its not going to be a very easy installation.I will bear this in mind and in my article ,I shall show the easy way and the more complex, where I shall be altering the internals .....

Yeah mines still new only 3,000klms on the clock! Will be waiting in anticiaption to see how the smoke situation prevails. Will also be interesting to see if you get any additional power gains?

Very strange a 2005 3.0d with excessive smoke!I have friends with a 2005 X5 reprogrammed and no soot!!

The primarily object of this exhaust project is not power gains(in my case, this has already been achieved)but then we dont want to loose any power either!Which why I am going to do this in 2 OPTIONS.We have to bear in mind that we are fitting a silencer designed for a high powered normally aspirated V8 engine ,not for a Turbo car?My OPTION 1 will be the easier way, whereby I will straight weld(or connect) the 4.8 silencers to the 3.0D system,in OPTION 2 ,I will be modifying the internal tubing of the silencers for a more "straight through" design and this will obviously be the option I shall adapt in my car!Experience in similar projects(and having a look at the internals of the 4.8 silencer) tells me that OPTION 1 should be ok!

well, I have 4.4i mufflers installed on my 3.0d....I wether permits, I'll try to shoot a video for you guys to see the "soot situation" IRL...I must say though that my 3.0d does not smoke a lot. Almost nothing. But I only have like 200km on the clocks, so maybe that will change...I'll try to post a video this weekend...

Hi Tomwac,
Congrats on your new x5.Looks nice and those wheels are awesome!I decided to get the 4.8 mufflers because I couldnt decide which tips I liked best! So,when I was informed that the 4.8 silencers were far cheaper than either the ones from the 4.6 or 4.4,This influenced my decision.I hope to have them fitted when I come back from my holidays.
