BobS is on a distinguished road
I bought the Actron first with the thought that I could use it on our 2000 chevy pickup as well as our 2001 X5. We also have a 92 525i but I knew that vehicles prior to 1996 would not be OBDII compliant and the Actron would be of no value for the 92 525i. Over time I came to realize from trying to work on the X5 with the Actron, that the generic codes that I was getting were just not specific enough and that I needed a code reader for the two BMW's we own. I was told as well that BMW was only required to share a basic subset of codes to meet OBDII compliancy and that there was an extended set of BMW codes that I would only get with the Peake. One little example I can give you is that on the X5 the Actron states I have a problem with the exhaust camshaft actuator whereas the Peake states it's a problem with the exhaust camshaft VANOS. When I had an exhaust camshaft position sensor go bad the Actron stated "camshaft position sensor B, bank 1" whereas the Peake would instead of saying "bank 1" it would say "exhaust".
Not a big extrapolation to make on either of these examples but I like things made as clear as possible. So I'll use the Peake for the BMW which is all it will work on anyway and I'll use the Actron for the Chevy pickup.

But to answer your question, I can look at and reset engine codes on the 01 BMW X5 with the Actron but I cannot reset the Inspection light with the Actron. That requires I use the Peake tool.
