When I was shopping in October, the price difference between the 3.0 & 4.4 was suprisingly close. Even though the 3.0 & 4.4 get similair EPA mileage ratings there seems to be a public trend (amoung non-enthusiasts) of shying away from V8's and moving towards smaller engines.

Botom line, test drive the 3.0 and 4.4 as long and hard as you can, and then decide what the difference is worth to you. The 3.0 is one of the auto industrie's best engines, it's just not a lot of hp/torque for moving around a 5000 lb vehicle in a manner that BMW's are famous for.

Hello Mfiver,

Thanks for your input,, have driven other 3.0s and a 4.4 also. The 4.4 is faster and seems to move the X5 a lot easier.
I have a line on a clean 2004 CPO that is pretty much loaded with 35k miles ,, asking about $37k,, just not sure if I should hold off and wait for a 4.4 to show up? Also if there is some std equipment that comes on the 4.4 thats does not come on the 3.0 I'll be using it some times to go up to Lake Tahoe in the winter.
Thank you
Jim

Per my repsonse to your post in another thread, I just puchased a 2004 4.4 Sport with 45k miles (most options except nav, but everything else, including comfort seats, 19's, etc.) in perfect condition, CPO from a BMW dealer for $30,990.

So yes, $37k sounds high to me, but you could use it as a starting point. Also go here - http://www.bmwusa.com/cpo/cpomain?na...USACPOMSTOPNAV
to see all dealer listed CPO X5's in the USA. Take this listing with you the when you negotiate! Lots of 2004 4.4's CPO's around $33-$34K and under.

Lots of things included on the 4.4 that are extra on the 3.0's. for example leather interior, xenons, self-leveling. You can pick them off the 2004 pricing guide on the home page of this site.

'04 has the updated electronics and engine vs '01-'03, which makes adding on electronic mods easier - My vote is for the 4.4, which gives the best mileage for the X5 - the 3.0 works for the X3, not the X5

Its Black Sapphire with Black interior. 35k miles.
asking $37K with 2.90% BMW loan and 2 free months payments
