warranty extension worth it? what is done at 45K service?

guys,

my '04 4.4i's service warranty expires next month, and it is $1k to extend it for another year. I have 39K miles on it, and the 45K mile service will probably come during this time period.

you guys know what is covered under the 45k service? would be cheaper to just pay that up front myself or will it be more than the $1k?

I searched and couldn't find any answers.....thanks in advance

You must be referring to a Maintenance Extension, not a Warranty
extention.

Confused on your use of terms. Maintenance covers brakes, wipers,
etc. Warranty covers things that break.

Need more info or, a clearer question.

I meant the maintenance extension. my '04 had the 4 years, 40K miles....they increased that in 05 to 5 years, 50K miles.

for us, there is an option to extend it by one year for around a grand.

my question is, what is covered in the 45K maintenance, and if one pays out of pocket, which one is cheaper?

Is this a leased vehicle? Would you be turning it in at the end of the lease? If you answer YES to both questions DO NOT spend the $1K to extend the warranty. The 45K maint is essentially an oil change.

If you plan to keep the vehicle I would suggest getting the extended warranty that covers you up to 100K miles.

Just my 2cents.

this car is purchased, not leased.

I thought the 45K mile was a buncha stuff besides oil change (flushing transmission, break lines, brake rotors, etc)....is this not true?

also, is there a couple of options? I heard there is a 6 year, 100K mile option, but does that include the service maintenance?

Like mD stated above, there are 2 types of extended warranty. There is the extended maint warranty which covers maint items (oil changes, brake pads, brake rotors, windshield wipers) up to 6yrs 100K. Then there is the drive-train extended warranty which covers other items such as the engine. (you need to read the warranty to see specific coverage)

Brakes are replaced only when the brake lining warning light in the dash comes on. This varies with driving style, road conditions, weather, etc. I got my 1st brake lining warning at 79K miles.

Again, If you are going to keep the vehicle for a while I suggest purchasing BOTH warranties.

Prices may vary so get quotes from a few dealerships if possible.

Good luck.

Modern BMWs in general need service at 30K intervals with oil changes in between. The first one is usually at or about 30K miles as determined by you car and how it was driven, and is known as Inspection 1. Inspection 1 is usually covered under warranty, but is basic enough for the shade tree mechanic to complete. At 60k at or about comes Inspection 2, which is more complete, and is outside of the warranty period, and usually some steps are outside the DIYers comfort zone.

Inspection 2 can be carried out by an independent BMW shop rather than the dealer and can save you quite a bit of money.

This is not to say however that your X5 may need work such as brakes or coolant between inspections 1 and 2, and the inspections are not a substitute for good maintenance.

In your case though, I suspect that since the extension being offered to you does not cover Inspection 2 that it is merely a ploy to separate you from 10 $100 bills, however, if it covers brakes and coolant, and you think you might need these items (inspect your brakes, and coolant should be changed every 4 years, every 2 even better) it may be money well spent if you are unable to do it yourself.

with R8X5 and Islands...

There is really no set 45k mile service, though Insp light often shows
up around that number.

But, brakes and stuff maybe worth the G to you, though as noted,
any good BMW knowledgeable Indie can do a full tilt boogie insp.
and brakes for less than a grand.
