Deja Vu...?

Hello all, I posted a question some time ago regarding the remove/refit of the steering angle sensor, but haven't had any responses..

I'm here again to ask if anyone has changed their steering angle sensor, and if so do they have any tips? I have a VERY brief pictorial description I have obtained from a TIS electronic manual, but thats it! There doesn't seem much to it by the looks of it, which gives me doubt about the task itself-I mean it looks too easy!

I have a 2001 4.4 (euro), so if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks, Ian

Been quite a while since I've changed one in an X5, but it should be pretty straight forward. The only thing is that the steering angle sensot has to be calibrated with the DSC module after replacement. So unless you know someone with a GT1. it would still have to go to the dealer...

Calibration is the Key.

Is yours broken completely, or is it just throwing the code from time to time. If its only from time to time it might need to be recalibrated. Mine just needed recalibrating.

The usual reason the light comes on for steering angle sensors is a plausibility fault caused by getting an ailgnment done which changes the angle of the steering wheel when it is straight. The sensor sees the wheel as slightly turned while the wheel speed sensors say you're going straight... which is why this fault usually comes up on the highway or a long straightaway.

If this is the case, it just needs to be recalibrated.

Weasel, is it a straight forward settings recalibrate on the GT1?
If not can you please post on the GT1 thread how to calibrate using GT1.
I'm sure Jose will be able to do a write up with pictures.

It's so easy even a caveman could do it!

No, but it really is pretty straight forward and self explanitory, easy task.

Thanks for your repiles guys, very reassuring. I'm going to have a look at changing it today as I have already bought the sensor. I realise I will have to get it recalibrated at a dealer or someone with this GT1 kit, but over here in the UK the dealer charges 1 hours' labour (yes I know...its only a 10 minute job!!) which is (hope you're seated) £150!! Not dollars, POUNDS!!!

I have already had the diagnostic check that has told me its the steering angle sensor by an indy, (that hasn't got the kit to recalibrate-damn!) after my ABS, DSC, and BRAKE lights have stayed on permanently for some time now. The indy reset these lights once, they came back on again after a short while, took it back and it was coming up with the steering angle sensor again!

I understand it may just want calibrating, but I have not had a wheel alignment done, nor did the person whom I bought the vehicle from so I'm banking on the fact the sensor has gone. Added to this is the fact that the previous owner had all this problem before I bought the car and has the ABS module and various ABS sensors changed out, obviously to no avail.

Will let you know how I get on... Ian

All done except calibration. It is easy like you said Weasel, but it would have been easier if I DID NOT follow the TIS!! TIS instructs the user to NOT remove the clamp screw, then push the steering spindle down...

WRONG!

You have to remove the clamp screw to separate the lower steering spindle (goes into footwell) from the top spindle (connects to steering wheel etc). The instructions were poor at best. It says to push the spindle down, but HOW? It was stiff and there's no room in there for your hand to grab the spindle, let alone have any leverage to give you strength to push it down. Anyway I worked out that you have to lever it down against the steel pressing directly above it using a screwdriver. After that its a piece of cake.

Just a matter of finding a stealer that wont charge me ridiculous money for 10 minutes work.... (thinking....)
