If the 335i is in the right gear, you are not going to beat it. Even with a 4.8is. If you mash the gas and the guy is sleeping in a high gear, you may stay ahead for a while. Otherwise, no contest. Seriously people, please stop comparing even a 4.8is to a 335i. It is no contest.

I have less turbo lag than the X5 has downshift lag with the steptronic.

TT lag??? It reaches fulll torque from about 1500 rpm! Virtually no lag at all compared to most turbo cars.

Oh yeah, and as of my ride home from the band gig tonight I can tell you the 4.6is is faster than a regular hemi charger (5.7?)on big stupid 22" wheels... From a stop and from a roll. He even got the jump on the roll from about 35mph because I didn't expect him to floor it out of no where, but I pulled on him quick before he had a chance to put any length on me.

The best part, I had the stereo cranked pretty damn loud jammin death metal and didn't even turn off the AC or put it in sport mode. Just slammed that skinny pedal and let her do all the work. (on an empty, straight, flat road with absolutely no traffic at 3am)

So what's your poison, i mean instrument?

I've made it a point not to be baited by any car, even if i know i can take them. If i do engage in any spirited driving, of course if road conditions permit, i may do so only if it's another SUV...i figure it's fair game.

I guess my poison is a mix of my love for music and being a good friend... I just help carry the gear for my friends band. (although they want me to get a sampler board and join in) Last night I carried the stacks for the bass player and most of the drum set.

Hopefully that was the last show I gotta load down the X for, they got the classic metal playing bar band hauler windowless ford econoline van now, I just gotta fix an issue or 2 on it first.

But she was running great last night and I did fall for the bait and run the guy... but after handling up on him a couple times he just turned off on a random side street with his feelings hurt.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I agree that an e46 M3 would be a better overall track car and you really can't beat the handling of the M, but with tuning, the e46 M3 can't touch it with regard to straight line performance. All the extra torque can be nice for everyday driving. Plus, no regular 3-series has ever been as close to the M version as far as performance is concerned. For what it is, the 335i really is a beast.

I love the e46 as much as anyone, but I will have to admit that the e92 has grown on me to the point where I am starting to see the e46 as a classic design, but just a smidge dated. Especially if you look at how clean the front and rear bumpers look on an e92. I have a feeling that a lot of e46 lovers will take to the e92 as it ages. It really is a beautiful car, IMO. Especially with the CSL wheels.
