Forgot about this thread as I was hoping it was all resolved... I had an E60 545i with a slight shudder/skip feel at speeds from 35-40 mph under slight accelloration (6 speed transmission in either 4th, 5th or 6th). It was caused by the transmission control module wrongly activating/deactivating the torque converter lockup clutch while under slight accelloration in that speed range. Ended up installing new control module to fix it.

The thing is that one is different than yours, it hac a "mechatronics" module which is built into the valve body while yours has an EGS control module in the box under the hood. But I think that may be the cause of your issue, and you should play around to isolate any/all variables that affect it. When it happens put it in manual mode and see if it happens while in different gears etc.

Hi Weasel,
Thanks for your reply,It doesn't shudder in the S mode.
The Module was re-flashed,should it fix the soft glitch?
Anyway,I am thinking to change the differential fluid,as one of the guys suggested to do so.
It doesn't happen all the times, but it's a city speed range,40 km/h so I face this once or twice a day per say.
My another concern is,should it damage the tranny,I am worried, yes I've got a warranty on it 40.000km or 24 months, but if that shuddering keeps slowly ruining the tranny I may get to the point of no warranty and no tranny in the near future.
About the module,is it expensive one? should I go with new or a used one would work just fine?
I made 2500km since the rebuild and 1000kms or so I noticed that when I drive it cold I can hear that torque converter or something squeals during the shifts, once it gets warm it stops.....weird isn't it?

Did you have the transmision module reprogrammed? Any difference? And the module is decently expensive... you can get it pre-programmed from realoem for just over $1300, but it would still need to be encoded to your X5 to get the right vin# etc in it.

But I would not go that route until you have had dealer diagnosis in case they come up with anything else... Just tell them what all has been done to this point.

I was wondering if I could get a used unit? Can it be programmed to my VIN?

Not really. Once a module like that is programmed to a vehicle it is "married" to that vehicle. BMW's software programming system doesn't really let us get around that, just kicks out of the programming session telling us to change the offending module. I'm sure there may be some way around that, but it would take someone knowing how to work around that... which I don't. (I've never had a reason to really)

And it also depends on the year, engine, transmission model used basically as the later trannys have the module built into the valve body inside the transmission.

The member that knows the most about non-standard programming is killcrap. Who is also a dealer tech and has much more knowledge and experience with non-standard programming techniques, custom encoding and vehicle order modifications.

I am having the same problem for over 2 years and originally was told by the dealer my tranny would go, well it hasnt but the shuddering still persists and as Diyanich I dont get it in sport mode. I however had the module reprogrammed when I had warranty but the problem still occured. I was told by a indy shop that the problem most likely 90% is the differential mounts and the cost with labour is $1200. I just wanted some confirmation if this could be the problem? The question that puzzles me is that why wouldnt the transmission mounts be faulty in S-mode?

Hi Weasel,
I was wondering if dealer would have any way to track down the shudder cause? It's driving me nuts already.
I had the fluid flush and it's 3/4 BMW recommended LT 71141,but it shudders yet,and lately the point is less speed related if not the engine revs I would say.
I read that some tranny bumps, lurches are simply caused by spark plugs and not tranny related things..
I am planning to bring it to the dealer,is it worth it? 'cause apparently there're no codes.

There are many things that can cause a shudder feel, and the best way to track it down is physical diagnosis. I would first call your service adviser and explain the problem and express to him that you would prefer one of the more experienced techs (master tech) to diagnose it and to do a complete enough diagnosis to have confirmed the actual cause before throwing up an estimate for transmission. (I personally have driven around with my shop foreman in the passenger seat holding the diagnostic tester in his lap to observe the torque converter lockup clutch circuit via TC speed vs engine speed to confirm my diagnosis)

I had the module re-flushed and had no luck either.
Well,I am reading and researching a lot online, and many are pointing to the torque converter or valve body.
I am pretty sure that it's a Lock up related issue or faulty torque converter, mine was rebuilt,as valve body was,but when I came back to the shop and said,I still get the same problem after the rebuilt, guy got the valve body(which was sent to get rebuild) checked and found out some tolerances issues, one part was replaced (cast aluminum piece alongthe pressure valve within it).Since then my rear end bump was gone. So,after all, probably it's a good choice to get the valve body replaced.
On russian X boards I find some info about the bearing of some kind and the stator being not to the specs and that causes slippage/shudder.
I don't know what to do,honestly,I am still optimistic, but I think that if I don't find the solution I am gonna try to get rid of it.F@#$ it,it's ok,I am ready to pay expensive, but come on get fixed at least, but not and nobody knows the solution and here we go with "differential mountings" theories, which are self healing under certain conditions etc.
Really it's hard to get used to that BS.

That's the way I will go.The only problem here is that the dealership is just about 3 years old, this town had none for few decades.
