X5 Internal heater problem
I have a 2001 X5 diesal. The internal heater stopped working a few weeks ago. I looked on this site and read about the Final Stage Resistor. So I changed that and all was fine.....for two weeks. Now the heater has stopped again. Not even a murmer. The fuses are OK, the lights on the heater panel are OK. Ive taken the panels away from the foot well to access the FSR. I can open up the airvent to see the fan and it is a little stiff to manually spin - but it wont function! Does any one have any ideas on a fix. Or does anyone have a wiring diagram for the FSR so I knoe what it does! Thank thanks Paul |

Well I didnt get any response from this site. Maybe no one here has experienced this before.
I looked more on the web.....had a chat with garage/ specialist or two. I had the OBC read to see if that highlighted anything but no. I wanted to check if the fan was broken or just not receiving the correct message/ voltage from the heating system. While hunting the web i found the following info detailing how to check the electric feed to the hedghog, the electric feed to the fan and the feed (vairable voltage) from the heating system control panel. I was able to operate the fan directly by a 12v supply - fantastic! All in all, I had a poor electrical connection on the hedgehog plug. The hedgehog didnt even need to be replaced first time round. I had origanaly been to see two garages about this, but they didn't diagnose this.......hmmmmm.... I hope this may help others if they experience this problem. the front AC blower on my 2003 X5 3.0i is out (rear working fine). I checked the fuses in glove compartment but all are OK. Any suggestions? 1. The climate control ![]() blower motor is controlled by a final stage unit which receives variable voltage from the climate control head. 2. Disconnect final stage unit which is located beneath passenger side of dash and installed near firewall into the lower side of the heater box. Check for variable voltage coming from climate control head when fan setting is changed on the Blue/Red wire. If voltage does not change as fan speed is changed at the control head, wiring or control head problem may exist. 3. A Yellow/Green wire should have power from fuse 50. 4. The Brown wire is direct to ground. 5. The Black/Green and Red/Green wires go directly to the blower motor. Supply them with power on one wire and ground on the other and the blower motor should operate. 6. If voltage from control head varies when changing blower speed, but blower will not operate at the correct requested speed and/or operates independent of the request, the final stage unit should be replaced Final stage appears to be screwed into heater case, but is actually held by a large clip which can be pressed and the final stage can be removed at the same time. The blower motor is located under the center of the dash. The top part of the dash needs to be removed in order to replace the blower motor. |

Shame that no one replied to your thread..sorry,but as you say, maybe no one ever had that problem!I havent yet, touch wood!
Now that you replied to your own question with indications on how to solve and repair the ac blower, this will be extremely useful should any member ever have the same problem ,we can only say thank you very much for posting

I hadn't seen this thread before, or I would have suggested playing with the plug to the FSR with the system turned on to see if it kicks it on. (bad connection on the main power or ground) This problem isn't common, but isn't unheard of. I usually get maybe one a year through the shop like that.

[ There is a octopus like relay in the drivers side foot well to the left just behind the dash. The fuse is about 40 pound. My heating was not working in side and I replaced this and the heating is working perfect.Hope this helps.
