My CPO 05 4.4 is in for this repair right now. I had to bring it back a few times but it is having the shaft and levers replaced I hope that fixes the problem.

I asked them to look at other possible causes such as oil separator hose, cam sensor etc ( from other thread) , he said those were unlikely causes for misfire. they will test it again in the morning (cold start)....and most likely will be bringing it back tomorrow afternoon.

It seems like replacing intermediate levers is a major work. How much would it have cost me out of warranty?
Parts alone are a ton... I think 3k?

Update - they updated the DME software sent by BMW corporate. it's been mid 30's overnight here, and when I started the car in the morning, it gave a slight rocking (like an agressive cam) when the RPM's dropped from the high idle.

It'll be 15 deg overnight in a couple of days here. I told my SA to leave his schedule open

My 05 4.4 just had 2 staright days with a rough start. Car initially shakes at idle, even more so when engaging reverse but quickly disappears when in drive and never returns the rest of the day. There was no SES light, but is this bound to get worse? Is this how it starts?

Update - BMW Corporate's DME update has stood the first test of cold start. 18F in detroit last night. Started it up with the higher RPM, and as it dropped to about 650/700 rpm, there was a slight hickup, but then stabilized quickly.

Two small issues.
- A few times when lightly driving waiting for the car to completely warm up, the car felt like it cut fuel for a split second, and then engaged, causing a "rear ended" jolt feeling.

- The fully warmed up idle is around 550 rpm, so I think I didn't receive the 800rpm "quick fix" programming. The idle vibration is still very prominent - it's almost like the seat is a big cell phone, and someone's calling. There's a cyclic idling, where every second, the RPM's drop slightly and then come back. The vibration disappears when you add any throttle. It doesn't change between drive and park/neutral.

I hate to bring it in for this, as I'm starting to believe my issue with the embarrassing cold start is fixed. However, I still don't think it's normal that my body feels a constant uncomfortable tingling/tickling from the idle. Anybody else with a 4.4 feel vibration at idle? It didn't do this 14K miles ago when I picked it up in Feb 2009.

Ahhhhh!!!!!

15 deg morning - cold start. Car starts with high idle, drops, lug lug lug.

Lug lug lug, SES light flashing. Here we go again!

Back in again - to fix both the cold start and the vibrating idle.

Crazy.

Killcrap, your insight has yet to be proven wrong. Surprised that BMW doesn't even want to diagnose the levers with the check procedure.

update--9 degree morning cold start....no issues at all..i guess new intermediate levers did the trick

BTW what is DME update..I asked my SA if they could update my software..he said there is general update available as such..updates are available for specific issues....i do feel some hesitation at low speeds...would DME update help ?

thanks

The car seems more responsive now after the DME update. The dealership had to download the update directly from BMWNA, since it was a PUMA case where BMWNA specifically looks up the issue with the car and issues repairs (from what I understand). Otherwise, as long as your trans software is updated, and your car has been through the dealership, if there's a general update and you're under warranty, I think they would have done it.

Good luck! It's great that your car doesn't have the issues anymore! I hope mine gets fixed!
