The strainers for the front and rear windshield pumps seem to cost less directly from your stealer and cost more on eBay than these inexpensive pumps!

The two pumps are located next to each other facing the firewall.

The pump on the side next to the engine is for the headlight washers, if you have them. It takes a different strainer and is a different style pump.

I have a 2001 X5 4.4i.

Just wondering have you personally tried those $5 pumps? I'd be a bit wary of a generic pump with no brand name mentioned, and frankly the quality of a $5 pump.

The factory part that i used is the Siemens/Continental pump that you can find on Amazon or Ebay for about $35 (often labeled VDO). It was the identical part that came out of the car. Having said that, since the OEM pumps that are in the car are such crap maybe the $5 pump couldn't be any worse?

I just ordered two for $11 shipped. The eBay seller has previously sold 470 of them. I'll let you know after I've used them for awhile. The pump has a one year warranty. I guess I'll have to find out how well they perform for $5.50 each.

As the OP of this thread, I need to revisit it...
Same subject, different problem, but still undiscovered..
Found a puddle of WW fluid under my X5 yesterday morning...
Took to my friendly Indy buddy, (11 degree outside temp and no heated garage = No DIY)Replaced the pump that looked like it was leaking.
Drove her home, and said good night
Woke this AM and there is a BIGGER puddle under the X.
Took it back to Indy (it was 4PM so we were a bit rushed), but the pump was not leaking.
There seems to be a leak somewhere heading towards the headlight washer on the PASS Side, but darned if either of us could find it.. we found a tiny puddle on the frame rail. But that's about it...

Any one got any ideas...??

Sounds like the hose is leaking. It all breaks down eventually. You need to trace that line. Did you try to spray the headlights while looking under?

Yep. Here's another odd thing. Today it's not as cold (only 28 !) and it's not dripping. And I did run all the tests and I can't find a bad hose or a bad gromett at the pump or strainer...

Mine was doing the samething. I ended up finding out the headlight washer pump was not working and the two o rings in the strainer were missing. Still waiting for the new pump and strainer to arrive however in order to stop the wwf from emptying out every 3 days I took some silicone and put in in the strainer (tried to fill the place where the o rings go) and then put some on the pump. Inserted it and let it dry for 4 hours. No more problem with it leaking. BTW, I checked the headlight hoses by pulling the hose from the pump and taking my small air compressor and blowing some air through the hose to confirm the pumps and everything was fine.

Strange indeed. Maybe some o-ring freezing up and leaking. Maybe some frozen water expanding something. I keep de-icer type of fluid in there during winter.

I have an '02 X5 3.0 w/o headlight washers. My fluid is leaking and I cannot find where. I have replaced both pumps and both seals/filter grommets - and, it's still leaking! Whenever i look everything is dry. It does not appear to be the tank or hoses. Does anyone know what else it could be? Thanks!

I ended up having to put some silicone under the strainer to keep it from leaking, despite replacing the strains and pumps.
