while the issue may be a balancing issue...even though they would have been balanced when mounted, I think it is just a smart idea to make sure 100% that the vibration is not from having no rings.

balancing 4 20inch wheels could run you close to $100, rings will run you $20.

so i assume by that you mean they can only help and will have no negative effect if they weren't needed. with that being said, anyone recommend a size for a 20" staggered set and brand?

Going around in circles.
You WILL need them if the bore is larger than yours.
You WONT need them if the bore is the same.

Swapping wheels, etc won't solve you problem.
Too many variables at hand. Bad wheel, bad tires, etc.
Identify your issue rather than reinventing the wheel (in a literal sense)

Not true, if the hub bore of the wheel fits the hub of the vehicle perfectly, hub-centric rings are not needed and would not even fit.

I just meant you should measure your wheel hub and vehicle hub to find out.

Or I guess you could kill two birds with one stone, and take your vehicle in for a look at a wheel shop, and ask them to decide if its the lack of rings or balancing.

For a quick/free check:

Loosen lugs, jack vehicle corner and put it on a stand, friend applies brakes, use jack to support wheel, torque lug bolts to spec, lower vehicle corner, repeat for other three wheels. This way, there is no load on the wheel while you're tightening the bolts. Take it out for a drive. This trick works, but is not a replacement for centering rings. Like others said, they are a good investment.

There is a 1.7mm difference between the early hubs and the late wheels. If the wheels are not secure on the hubs then the bolts will also take the side loading of the weight of the vehicle as well as the rotational load. I have E70 wheels on my E53 and they certainly needed the rings.

Going faster will not necessarily make the vibration worse as the vibration frequency sets up an oscillation in the suspension at certain speeds, just like a wheel imbalance, and this is what you feel, so will be speed related, not speed sensitive.

I have E70 wheels on my E53, Ive tried two different types of hub centric rings (plastic and aluminum). While it is night and day with and without I still have a vibration right at 60MPH.

Prior to getting the rings I thought it was a balance issue. I had all 4 wheels road force balanced and the vibration was a little less. The mechanic mentioned that the rings were necessary. I got tried both types of rings and while it is pretty much the same.

I just got back from having just the fronts road forced balanced again. It is slightly better but it still shakes at 60. I am ready to put my E53 wheels back on.

Any ideas? My 19" E53 sport wheels were vibration free, new wheels are E70 wheels with latitudes run flats.

The plastic ones are pretty useless but the alloy ones should be fine although if they are not anodised, they will wear.

Have you got staggered tyre sizes if not, try swapping front to rear. I would suspect either you have distorted tyres, in which case its a great opportunity to dump those run-flats, or your thrust arm bushings are worn.

It certainly sounds to me like a distorted tyre. Were they new or used tyres?
