Vinyl is actually going to be more permanent than paint when it comes to interior trim. It will resist scratches better, will stretch a bit to expand and contract under different temperatures and overall will just hold up better.

So I'd say Vinyl is the way to go. Paint is going to need touch up, scratch repair etc..

RB, I have been thinking about doing 2-tone interior for my iS. I think either silver or Imola red door inserts, with Brush Black trim. If and when I decide to do so, I'll let you know.

Tam that would look awesome, I was actually thinking what if you did the door pieces and the dash pieces by the steering wheel in the same silver or imola, then do the console, ashtray and rear cupholder brush black?

Would keep the trims at eye level in one color and then the console etc be your other tone. The possibilities are endless!

Going to order myself an E39 retrofit illuminated leather shift knob kit from Tischer to put in with my UUC SSK, and new 5 spd insert as I don't want m badge. That will hold me over till I do my trims

Hopefully the retrofit will come with the correct color LEDs. I did the retrofit about 14 years ago and the lighter yellow LEDs (like in the M5 and 4.8is) clashed with the red in the 540. I couldn't stand it.

I took the shifter apart:

See the stock LEDs

Soldered new LED's:

And got a red pattern to match the dash!

Good luck!

The tips look crooked in the pic showing straight on in your driveway, but it might just be the pic.

Prop, I'm looking to do this knob in my X5 but tough to tell what kind of illumination, the picture looks red, I have to do more research and cross reference part numbers, what cars had red illumination besides your 540?

M-Tech Illuminated Gear Knob

This is the cross reference when the part # in that link is ran on RealOEM, I looked at the pics in the link again and it does look red illuminated:

Drove to work through a foot of snow. VDOT should pay me for clearing the road with the 315's
