I was due for an air filter anyway, and thanks to Rado, a former member who sold his X5, I purchased his gently used AFE intake for my 3.0, with Pro Dry S filter. Should be a nice little upgrade, he gave me a nice deal (basically half off new price), so I think we both make out ok. Will post up when arrived and installed.

From my Ford diesel truck experience, I know many vouch for Afe's; given the possible dusting issues indicated in my recent Blackstone, from a stock box and 'not excessively dirty' OEM filter, I'm a bit leery about Afe's or similar 'open' filter systems. Its not apparent to me from the afe website how the top of this kit seals [if at all] against the hood. Do you rely on the 3" conical filter, and not a seal on the box, alone?

Well let me start out and say that I clean my filter yearly, and am a fan of the AFE filter because it is non-oiled, which when people overoil filters they tend to get MAF issues and high silicone readings on the oil samples.

Although personally I've had K&N filters on all my cars for 10 years without a single issue, the key is to make sure the filter is cleaned well, extremely dry, and minimal amount of oil before installing back in the car.

There is a rubber gasket on top of the airbox which seals to the hood when closed, and the intake still utilizes the stock "snorkel" of intake air from the top radiator shroud and leaves the bottom of the air box in place, just takes the top off and the AFE installs in place.

Do you have a K&N in your airbox now Riggo? I'll have one available if you want it, just wanted to try something different.

nope, minty fresh OEM Mann; I plan to run a Blackstone at next oil change, then consider a change if it shows silicon, etc. suggesting a leak I haven't seen or questionable filtration.

Good plan, looking forward to hearing if your readings go down on next oil change.

I'll keep the K&N filter for now "just in case", as it makes no sense to try and sell an air filter lol and I know of no other 3.0 guys who would want it on here.

If I'm impressed with the AFE Pro Dry S filter, I am considering getting one for my wifes 2011 Rav4 as well.

I watched the oil filter video. Scary ish. I have used WIX filters and looked up the specs, they capture down to .25 microns which I believe is less than the .100 the video says the oem filter.

Prop, I'm looking to do this knob in my X5 but tough to tell what kind of illumination, the picture looks red, I have to do more research and cross reference part numbers, what cars had red illumination besides your 540?

M-Tech Illuminated Gear Knob

This is the cross reference when the part # in that link is ran on RealOEM, I looked at the pics in the link again and it does look red illuminated:

If i remember correctly, the M and the "is" clusters has a lighter version of the "cockpit" lighting, and therefore, i would think that the lighted M shift knob would match the rest of the M interior... is there a non-M lighted shift knob version? the non-M would match the non-M and non-"is" car...
