I not saying it cant go very fast, but 4 2 t SUV or if u prefer SAV u can find better option if u want 2 race, like ///M3,that car is made so u can drive fast around corners.U missed my point,X5 is a fast SAV,but that is all.

After I remaped my X I fitted M series wheels and lowered it 30mm and I personally haven't driven any mid range sports car that out handles it. It refuses to body roll and the steering is very precise, yes its modified but no more than a standard 4.8is. So to turn something from good to great in the Xs case doesn't take much in both performance and handling, (Appreciate your input)

the only thought i have is that, other than the great sound effects from the V8, the diesel does almost everything i want........... except i have encountered an idiot on the motor way when i could have done with a little more high end speed.

oops, did i say that.

must add though in my case as i do around 40,000 km per year the diesel looks after my wallet really well.

i would love to have my x reprogrammed but i am concerned about the strain on driveline components, so will probably just enjoy what i have

Ok, I havn't read all of it, but 3.0D (stock) vs. 4.4i (pre-facelift, stock) I can tell you that 4.4i is faster in acc. but I didn't do it, guys who compared told me. But then again I do go faster then all pre-facelift 4.4i-s that I tried to compete with, and mine is also stock. I also tried with facelifted 4.4i and we got same result until 4th gear, on 4th he started going faster, but my sunroof was open(that does do damage on aerodynamics) what else? no way that 3.0D chipped will do 4.8is. Plus Gotta love the sound. efficency does do a job, but if you don't care, go for V8. I had opportunity for switching my car to 4.6is, but I decided to wait and go for 4.8is in winter. that IS vs. nonIS difference metters to me. so decide on your own. if you want car which pulls harder, V8 is way to go. and NM difference will do, but for start, as soon as you redline it, Horsepower wins.

Some good info NIK thank you. I found it interesting how high torque and lower HP vs high HP and lower torque, My X leaps of the mark and loves uphill grades, all torque, but does run out of legs on the flat which in AUS our speed limits are restrictive any way, on TOP GEAR they bagged the 3.0d in the X6 for being underpowered but when you consider how far they have come the next ten years will be interesting I've read their getting around 350HP and 1000NM (remaped)with a VW TOUREG R50d, with the sorts of improvements diesels are acheiving you might wonder how many advantages their will be in purchasing V8 in the future,( a V8 diesel in a X5 perfect! ) It will be interesting to see how the US sales compare between the two.
@Bigwave if your doing those sorts of Ks I dont think I'd be spending the money on upgrades you'll most likely be replacing it in a couple of years anyway. Thanks for the replys.

Np. Yes, Diesels are indeed getting far and they are realy easy to remap and tweak. but I am thinking that they can't outrun Gasoline engines since ///M does gasonline. and audi and benz have some pretty hard-core gasoline engines. and I agree that torque is good feeling. I got 420, could only imagine what 600 would do. yesterday I got around highway and as I was coming from airport I saw Mercedes E class following me and I kickdowned it on the exit. He couldn't get behind, but I sat for a while untill he passed me, then I started going again, I cought up, but could pass him since on brakes car started to give me slide filling due to some problems in driveline, so sadly, I let him go, Didn't want to crash on 200+km/h. what do you think Diesel would do @ those speeds? and that Touareg you mentioned, It's efficency sucks! burns far alot more fuel then 4.4i.

EDIT: Don't know about MPG, but try a Audi Q7 V12 6.0 TDI on google.

I was asked by a member on our Aus forum about the drive line implications with remaping. My view is with the ZF trans I don't see it as a problem when you consider the towing capacity of an X5 and the level of strain that puts on the drive line hence the reason why its recommended to fit a trans oil cooler if towing is your thing and you don't hear anyone advising against towing a large caravan uphills or pulling a large boat up a boat ramp, also I think most people who own X5s drive them sensibly its just every so often they like to give them a blast well thats how I drive mine and I've had no issues in over two years. But then you'll get those who will say yes if the vehicle was new ok, well not everyone who tows does it with new X5s.
