I agree. Auction cars are a crap shoot. And remember that the same car would go for around 25-28 at a dealer

Nice choice. I love the Avant platform and the S4 is hot. I have heard they are very thirsty though, especially if you have a heavy foot. With the S4 you can't help but get on it too.

Realistically, any V8 is thirsty anyway. Once you own V8's the EPA estimated MPG are just numbers to "shoot for" anyway.

I guess you haven't had your X for very long. Repairs on a German car are generally expensive regardless of manufacturer. My BMW's aren't cheap to keep but the trade off of fun/performance for higher maintenance and repair costs are worth it.

I drove an S4 from 48K miles to 93K miles and it required very little maint and repair.

- spark plugs every 55K miles
- serpentine belts at 75K
- oil changes every 10K
- one window regulator
- valve cover gaskets at 80K

That's pretty much it. Audi's from about 2003+ are pretty similar to BMW's of that era in terms of reliability and cost to maintain / repair. Meaning neither are cheap!

Damn it! Now you have me thinking of selling the X and the M5 and just having fun withe the S4......grrrrrr. I'd be giving up 45hp but I still don't run my cars that hard and almost never race unless provoked by an idiot who doesn't know cars.

You are not giving up much really. S4 weighs a little bit less than an M5 and the AWD helps it off the line with traction. In real-world driving they have similar accelleration. M5 is slightly faster and pulls a bit harder up over 80mph which is not a condition that we use much around here!

Don't make that mistake. Been there. I'm a S4 fan too, but the S62 in the M5 is much, much more special and pleasing.

True, but more-so the whole car, not just the engine. The S4 4.2L V8 is pretty sweet actually. Sounds amazing with an aftermarket exhaust too. But there is something very pure and special about the E39 M5 - it is no doubt the quintessential sports sedan. And I just can't shake the thought of picking up another one at some point!!
