If you don't want it there, put it somewhere else. Here are two threads with alternate mounting locations for the standard AUX input:

I used an Icelink myself, and ran it under the console to the cup holder, then mounted the iPod to the lobster claw tray.

If you don't want any integration to your steering wheel controls (for other than volume) then the BMW aux is fine. If you want to control the device, the Icelink, later called the DICE, worked well.

The links are helpful, thanks. I used to do plenty of car audio work but money to spare + no time to spare = have someone else do it, so I liked the idea of having the local dealer install the stock kit since I'm weary of creating creaks and rattles (It's nice to let someone else fix them if THEY cause them!!)...BUT, in the first link you provided, the picture where he shows his chosen location is perfect (reattached here) and the second link is a perfect guide to do it myself;

I think I'll get the stock BMW part and then wire the jack to the inside of the console ashtray, it's a perfect spot for my Droid3 Global and will be hidden when the ashtray is closed. Also, I'm not an iOS fan so no iphone port is needed, hence the DICE isn't a great option for me.

Thanks again.

I guess even the manual trans X5's are not immune to door carrier issues. I'm replacing mine in the next few days. Getting sick of my fiance not being able to open her own door lol

Installation of the Aux is a breeze! the radio comes out with one screw (non nav), and from there there is plenty of access to route the cable. It took me about 15 min to do it.

Hi guys,

Yes, the AUX input cable was easy - because Rolf has the Business CD and changer, the plug that would have otherwise been empty when adding the AUX required instructions that were a little more complicated - nonetheless, after taking the connector apart and adding in the three wires that would have just plugged in, it was easy from there. The instructions were surprisingly complete.

The only other thing I've added is the rear bumper protector to keep the top of the bumper from getting scratched up.

As soon as I have the M3 put back together (complete cooling, brake and suspension R&R) I'm thinking of pursuing the short shift kit some of you were asking Rob (at UUC) to put together - has that all been finished and is it now available?
