E53 Replacement Suggestions?

My 2002 X5 4.4i is getting increasingly annoying with things breaking. At 180K+ miles I was hoping to make it to 200K before moving on, but I'm starting to look. Here's my criteria...

1. Fun to drive (good performance and looks).
2. Equal or MORE cargo space (need more than the current 55 cu ft for band equipment and instruments).
3. BETTER FUEL ECONOMY (30+ MPG is my goal).
4. <$50K (the more less, the better!)

My considerations so far....
1. 2011 X5 Diesel (almost 30 mpg highway).
2. NEW 2013 Ford Escape (looks cool, lots of features, impressive specs, and HALF the price).
3. 2013 Range Rover Evoque (cool looks, good performance, but light on the cargo space)

Any recommendations?? What would YOU replace your X5 with?

I LOVE the way it drives!
I HATE its poor reliability and quality!

Your thoughts??

Thanks
Myles

Since this is a X5 forum I would suggest the 2011 X5 35d but it would probably blow your budget.

I had been looking at VW Jetta SportWagen TDI. About $30,000 loaded, 42 MPG highway, about 66 cubes of total cargo volume, good build quality inside and out, and fun to drive for what it is. It's not the sexiest thing around but there are lots of guys out there who mod them. A Toureg TDI is good too but with much lower MPG and a much higher price tag. I wound up with an Audi A4 Avant.

I would probably look at an X1, but since you want the luggage space, maybe a new X3.

28i, four cylinder. 28 mpg highway.
More luggage capacity than the E53 (just slightly)
Better acceleration than your 4.4
38,500 MSRP. Deal from there, get a few options, keep it below 50.

if the new X3 comes out with a 35d version or even a 30d version that will be my next ride.

it may be another 6 or 7 years though for me because i'll have trouble getting rid of my manual trans!

At risk of being kicked off the board...

I'll probably look at an SUV that comes with a 10 Yr/ 100K mile powertrain warranty, which may be a Korean make.

We have young kids, and my wife drives very hard in LA stop & go traffic. My priorities are shifting toward a vehicle that has better warranty coverage, and cheaper repairs for items not covered by warranty.

I'm in your boat with an 01 3.0... it has just over 200k and its time to start thinking about something newer. That said, I was in your spot at 185k... I chose to stick it out longer, and will still try to sqeeze a bit more life from her (I love the truck and I'm cheap).

I'll eventually give in an get a CPO'ed E70. The apeal of 30mpg Diesel is nice, but costly. probably go 3.0 again and hope that the car is simmilar enough that I can still work on it.

I would look at the new X3 or an A4 Avant Quattro.

The A4 would be decent to drive, looks good (especially with the S-Package), gets 28 mpg highway, has similar cargo space as your e53 (approx 50 cubic feet) and is < $50,000.

I also really like the X3 now. A year and a half ago my wife showed up at my office in a new E70 for me to try. I didn't like it; felt to me like I had to get clearance from the harbor master before I could dock the "boat.". Took it back to dealer and got to enjoy his expression when I said I preferred the way the E53 felt. And we probably had that E70 out all afternoon.......

So good luck with this - I'm in the same situation. Bought this E53 for my kids to use, and while a couple of my girls occasionally still do, that particular purpose has passed. So I started using it pretty much as a daily driver for myself instead of my truck, and sure enough I ponder options (although i only hit 100k on the clock a short while ago), but i really just kinda like this X.

Go get the X6, the 2012 and up offers 3-passenger in the back instead the original 2+2 seating. Trendy "coupe" styling even the 6-series now come up with 4-door grand coupe.
And who needs the M when you have V8 TT with practically 4 turbos, OK dual twin turbos where each turbine is fed by 2 cylinders, slapped Dinan S/W and that thing makes 500HP w/o even trying. Ggas prices is predicted to go down to $3/gallon by Hallowen so who needs diesel. The problem a 2-3 yr old CPO X6 is as rare as a Pegasus.

I'd put my money on the E70 35d

Failing that, have you considered a TDI toureg? Pretty much same as cayenne diesel drivetrain...
