Can't speak to your specific need, but my recollection is that someone figgered up the OD of someone wanting to 24" wheel bling his ride at Thirty Inches.

As someone then showed his chebby with said 24" wheels and said there was little rub or problems (which was met with Much "yeah, right") I would guess that you have 28" OD to play with, if you're not entering into specialized balloon tires (which might be better for your purpose). Five inches rubber all-round will not do any of your computer stuff any favors and will wear your components, I'm sure - like any four-wheelin', this will Not be a good experience for the longevity of your 4.8.

I'll just presume that these are "gee-whiz, let's have sum fun" slap-on wheel-tire combo and you'll put the real ones back on after the fun is done? If that's the case, then you should be safe with most anything and should ask other sand-rippers there what rubber works best?

Decent BMW 18" OE's from a transmission-victim 4.4 at a boneyard should be a cheap date, and then re-finish 'em as you like.

and hi, wish I could come and watch..

I think the OP wanted a setup that was left on all the time. The island that he is on has NO PAVEMENT. Which is something I can't wrap my mind around!!! lol, I also live in Jersey, sooooo, we just have beaches, lol.But I am going to assume since he is on sand all the time, he wants a solution where he can leave the Sandies on all the time.

Hey I mean if he can find a solution; driving on sand all the time, tire wear will be SUPERB!!! lol He may just have to replace tires due to age and not wear.

And remember, " Make sure you just Armor-All the tires so that sand doesn't seep in!" AKA- The Hangover!!!

Thanks for the responses everyone!

OK - so I should have clarified a little better - this is just a once off trip -I've been accepted into the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) and this is something that I've been wanting to do for years, and I'm doing the trip as my final trip before entering the Air Force.

I have made a couple of bids on a set of OE 18's at this stage - will hopefully all work out. I've found some 265/65/18 rubber - I presume that this will clear everything without an issue (not a great change in diameter) for 290 each (All Terrain's)

The island itself is only 125km's long - I actually live a lot further south and inland (Dubbo for those who are familiar with Aus) So its not something I plan on visiting all that often..

As to the ruts - my old man went up there not that long back, and he is more than adamant that the x will have no issues - i will be covering all my front bar, so that if I do nudge the sand, I'm not going to leave the island with no paint.. It isn't an unusual thing to hear of Outlanders, Foresters and the sort getting around the island - I'm fair confident the X is equal them in most means.

As for the 300zx - The staggered wheels weren't offered for TT's in the JDM market either - We have to import them from the states if anyone is chasing the wider rears (90% of them in Australia were grey imports from Japland)

That was what I was trying to say - presuming that you can find 'em, you could go considerably taller sidewall if you're not going airborn.

Calculating outer diameter will never be my long suit, I just go to mfg website and take their numbers.

good luck and fun..

to the original OP, mate while your tyres will be a concern i think your real issues will be with ground clearance.

maybe im chicken but theres no way im driving my X on the beach.

last time i went to fraser i had a fun time getting through the sand to the ferry, and that was in a 4x4 with 4 inch lift and 31 in tyres and low range, my son inlaw got stuck towing jet skis.

dubbo is a long way from Fraser, so you wouldnt want to do to much damage.

that said you may well be on top of this so good luck

@bigwave2255 - I've thought about this a LOT - i want to go and have a good time, and not break anything.. the way that i've looked at it is that its only sand - I have a Shorty Pajero with 33' muddies and 5' of lift - and i've taken it places that people swear a pajero would never make it without diff lockers or anything.. With sand, its more about the rubber - going over sand, you want weight distribution & surface area - that's why you let the tires down, so they balloon out (more contact area on the ground).. and in saying that, the ruts in sand are only as deep as the lowest car out there (which grades it down :p ) with the 4.8 I have the adjustable suspension - which although doesn't give me a great deal of clearance - I feel it should be enough to get me through.. I bought the car, I may as well get some fun out of it!

Worst case is that I can't get anywhere on the island, I have to park it & hire a 4x4, hike it, or just camp where I can get too..

I'd love to take my pajero up there, but its for sale & is impossibly uncomfortable to travel in & can't take enough passengers or gear for my liking!

Anyone have any ideas on if I can go bigger than 265/65/18?

mate i here what you are saying, there used to be an image of a jacked up x5 with mud style tyres floating around, have a look at google images for it.

as for the ruts its those pajero's with 33 in muddies that cause the troubles hehehehehe

just kidding you

Im sure you mean the StanceWorks one - All over it

Yeah - I don't wanna lift it or anything, but if i can squeeze in a higher profile tire, then I will be able to get a tad extra clearance that way too

I think it all comes down to how game you are to rape your x on the sand ruts

I would love to take my 4.8 somewhere like this. Nothing around us over here.

I say go to a tire shop. Have them slap on some tires in the front, and just check what fits.

The smallest wheel I've seen bolt on to the 4.8 is an 18. The "snow" wheel suggestion is a 8.5X18 ET46, the center bore on your X is going to be 74.1.

Since you're going to be running a fat sand tire you could get away with going to a much more aggressive offset than stock, probably down to the 20s and push the wheel out side of the tire well giving yourself inner clearance for when you air them down.
