Smoking driving me mad

Ok had the X5 for few weeks now

And upon first start up or if it's been left standing for a few hours it lets of
A white/blue cloud of smoke smells like oil

I have previously blanked hose of the vacuum pipe from EGR valve and smoke stopped a little

The vacuum pipe has now been reconnected when
Connecting it I thought I would see whether EGR was gunky

It was clean however there was some
Moisture inside valve but like a drop of oil

With the EGR vacuum pipe connected whenever I give it hard acceleration I leave behind a cloud of
Smoke

My question is what is at fault

- EGR valve
- EGR cooler
- valve stem seals

When the EGR is opened ,you get exhaust gases into inlet ,manifold that are then regenerated and out through exhaust again!Hence ,more smoke,but dont think this is your problem!
Have you checked your oil breather filter?If this is badly blocked,it also creates white smoke and is quite a common issue!If it blocks completely,the engine wont breath at all and you will get oil flow back into engine ,meaning it will run on its own until it self destructs.
Check this first,If its still the same then ,my guess is that your turbo seals are gone and letting oil through to inlet manifold.We never had a 3.0d here with valve stem steals probolem,even on some with 300,000 kms

Regarding turbo is this a easy fix?

Also when engine covers were removed and car started there was a little
Smoke from

If turbo seals are gone on turbo,you then a new or reconditioned turbo!Alternatively,you can have yours repaired by a specialist.Dont know where you are in UK ,but my company there works with TURBOACTIVE.They will repair and sell you a turbo.
Just put that on stanby for now!Your problem maybe something simpler!
You say you see smoke when you take engine covers off?You only have one engine cover!!!Where is the smoke coming from and what does it smell of?Exhaust or diesel or oil?
Changing to vortex type filter is safer but will let more vapour oil through,which is normal!Been reading your thread on X DRIVERS UK and when they say that there shouldnt be any oil on turbo/intercooler pipes,this is WRONG information!!!!Even on brand new cars ,there is always some oil residues on pipes ,on all makes!

smoke looked like coming from air intake area

and was blue/white smelt of burnt oil

A leak down test should shed some light.

looks as though the smoke was due to the air intake housing not being connected been told it's some sort of back draft

i have tested again and no smoke so fingers crossed it was just that

Why was it disconnected?What you mean "air intake housing"?Only air intake housing is in your air filter system ,on left side of engine and above exhaust manifold!
Who told you about the back draft?Same mechanic that told you ,your car had swirl flaps,on X Drivers Uk forum?

Apologise what I meant was I had the panel that is above the grill removed and the air intake pipe was open to

So when i cranked it over I suspect smoke came from there

Oh and this was a different mechanic who said that

You should never have any kind of smoke coming from inlet or manifold.In the engine bay,any smoke should only come out of a cracked exhaust manifold!
Smoke in inlet means you have turbo seals gone,valves (doubt it!)or oil breather clogged(shouldnt be since you say you replaced it with the vortex type!).
To make sure,slowly pull your oil dipstick out slightly ,with engine running and check if you have any smoke blowing out!If no smoke ,this eliminates the breather and valves,leaving just the turbo!
