What does the ABS sensors have anything to do w/ the self leveling suspension?

Adjustable rear links for the sensors. I included them in the pic above..they may look large, but those little arms are thinner than the diameter of a pencil and like 3-4" long.

$80?!?! Haha, no way...the picture of the links I posted above were maybe $10 in parts. These aren't something critical like a sway bar link or anything, they're just tiny little arms that move a sensor wheel up and down.

As for the scanner software. Yes it will be used to code out the check control BUT that gets overriden if for example the system thinks the rear is completely out if line with the fronts.

I've gone complete coilovers front/rear but when I loaded up the X with laminate flooring and the rear dropped significantly the message still can up on the dash as it thought the rear had completely been shot.
I've got a GT1 laptop, but don't know how to use it for the life of me. This guy said it's some other software, send me pics of his lowered X and says it works great...but he's disappeared on me. This is a guy I bought H&R springs for my 740 for YEARS ago, so he's not some fly by night guy, but I still don't know what's happened to him as to why he won't answer texts.

I know a guy over this side of the pond who has software (INPA maybe) that he can recalibrate the ride height so that's possibly what he's looking at using if you can get hold of him. However I would have thought if you have that software then you wouldn't need the links would you as you could just recalibrate the level anyway. Hmmmm.

I installed the K&R lowering kit several years ago. You can see the results in my album if you want. The kit comes with shorter springs and adjustable links. It has been trouble free. I understand the capability to change software to lower an X with airbags on both ends. If I had one I would still see if adjustable links would get me where I wanted to be if lowering was my only goal.

I had heard about some E46s breaking springs when it was time to rebuild the suspension on an E46 I had. I never got the sense it was that widespread and didn't replace the springs. They were fine at 168,000 miles when I sold it. I guessed the issue was more likely a result of very bad roads or ignoring speed bumps rather than corrosion. I have not seen evidence that problem carried over to E53s and in all the discussions here about rebuilding worn out suspensions I have read I don't recall anyone recommending springs should be replaced nor have I ever seen a suspension rebuild kit that includes or suggests new springs even be considered.

On most cars ive worked on ive replaced the coils as well, or they ended up getting replaced because of getting lowering ones etc.

Sometimes the coils actually do need replacing, example on the pathfinder my parents have the back springs are notorious for sagging after certain mileage.

And coil springs break as well..

Had a 01 a4 quattro 1.8t i sold but the rear coils were known to snap, on mine a peice actually snapped off at the very bottom it didnt affect it because the spring couldnt move around and was still set.

If you're doing just the front struts, an alignment is not necessary....if you were taking apart any more than that on the front, I'd get it don't for piece of mind.
If the front struts are in need of replacement, I assure you the alignment will change when they are replaced. The alignment may still be within specs but it should be checked. Same is true of any height change from last alignment and any of the parts normally replaced in a suspension rebuild. I would not put it in the category of peace of mind as my experience has been that alignment is almost always out of spec in all the above conditions.

I don't understand the logic that E53 springs should be replaced because springs failed on an A4 or a Pathfinder or even another BMW model that doesn't use the same part number. What am I missing?

Hello Helmuth,

Unless the springs are broken or you have sagging on one corner, no need to change them. I put Bilstein B6 on my 2002 X5 3.0 diesel about a year ago, front & rear. I can recommend a German seller with good pricing.

Installation is fairly easy, but I have spring compressors (a must for the front, not required for the rear shocks) and have changed shocks / struts on more than 100 cars over the years - mostly all BMW's from the 2002 up to the E53.

Front shocks take 2 to 3 hours. Rear take an hour.
