P2187 & P2189 Looking for the culprit 06 E53 N62

I need some input from you guys on this one...

The patient is my 06 E53 4.4i W/ 100K on the clock.

About a month ago I had my SES pop on. I pulled the codes with my Bluetooth OBDII Reader as I'm in the middle of a move and can't find my coding tablet with DIS/SSS ECT.

She is running fine with only the slightest hint of a idle anomaly at initial startup. Who knows maybe it's all in my head since I see a SES light on My girl was in the X the other day and she said it drives, sounds and responds like every other time she has been in it.

I have put 500 miles on since it's tripped the code and I'm not noticing any real difference in idle or drive-ability.

But of course it bugs me and I want it fixed....

I did rebuild her about 5K ago after the dreaded valve stem seal failure and she's been purrin ever since.... Well except for the brake booster I had to put in last month

The codes denote Bank 1 and 2 both lean.

I have my vanity cover off and have been poking around and see nothing broke or cracked so far.

Today I made an appointment at the stealer for the pass. occupancy mat recall and I actually considered letting them fix it since it will already be there. Then I told myself why do I want to spend $$$$ if it ends up being something like the two 30$ CCV's right on top there I can swap in 15min.
After thinking about it for a while I remembered my friends on Xoutpost waiting to give me a hand with some DIY advice

1. What do you think in might be based on generic codes?

2. What would you try replacing first to eliminate the code in a process of elimination drill down? ie. do I just order a pair of the CCV Spring & gaskets and see if that shuts her up?

3. Do you think the dealer will be directed to the failed component with a body specific computer scan rather than getting into 1-2 hrs labor physically pulling parts and testing systems. I'd rather not pay 150-200+ just for the dealer diagnosis but 70 for a half hour labor for a scan with the latest BMW software doesn't sound so bad.

4. WWYD?

TIA for your time guys

- Alex

Is anyone familiar with an updated dipstick for our cars?

I'm just remembering that a day or two prior to the SES light I check my oil and the dipstick was PIA to get back in.

After the code popped on I remembered having a hard time with it and I checked to make sure the top was seating correctly and it seems to be flush.

Possibly related?

Not a code or reader maven, but I rec'd a capable Indie with a good scan reader and some proprietary sub menu program(s)...

That method can narrow it down to a part or couple fixes vs the usual net menu or tree list of a half dozen things that might be the culprit.

Unless your local BMW dlr is your brother, that would not be my first stop to have repairs done...may be get your codes read and pay for the diagnostic there, and then get it repaired at an Indie, imo.

And, fwiw...an old thread on those two codes, with a dlr repair reading like CCV redo.
Could be simply anecdotal and not the cause or the fix. Get 'em read by someone with the proprietary sub menus to interpret the codes, imo.

Check the pipe between your air filter and intake for any cracks, and check to make sure the o-ring is seated properly on your MAF. lean = too much un-metered air getting in.

Dirty MAF can give wrong reading too. Clean it, clear the codes and see if they come back.

I just pulled it and it looks good minus some dust. I couldn't pull the MAF from it's piping to check the o-ring because I can't find my torx security bits

I guess that will have to wait till tomorrow when I can get a set or dig through storage for mine.

So I just checked the oil while I was looking around for the culprit to my lean condition and I pulled it out to find it bone dry with cotton woods seeds stuck to it definitely an OMG moment.

I shine mine light down and re insert the dipstick and see the tip poke out into the engine bay.....That's why it was so hard to get the dipstick in last time the DAMN upper dipstick tube came unseated FTL

I just checked the undercarrage and notice some oil on the frame rails and I'm about a quart low. I wonder if it's be coughing oil up out of my half a dipstick tube ?

Lame

Reconnecting upper tube, topping off w/ oil and resetting codes.....Back in 5
