Alarm micro switch under hood? Problem started when the temperature changed?

Just been reading back over this thread and I don't see any info. on the ignition switch ring antenna, which could casue your issues if it failed.

But more importantly, I recall you mentioned the key went through the washing machine... and you only have the one key. A corroding circuit in the key will certainly lead to a no-start scenrio.

The diamond key used by BMW isn't like many other keys in that the EWS transponder circuit is on the PCB inside the key. While it's doesn't use the battery, it is fragile compared to the ID13 and ID 48 transpoder chip used by VW etc.

BMW key..

Older VW ID13/48 chip...

It might be prudent to confirm the correct operation of the EWS system (key, ring antenna etc.) at this point, espeically given the symptoms and the history... (key gets washed, then becomes intermittant a few weeks later, then fails completely).

I tried to check starter relays with a generic Bosch relay, but will that work for testing purposes? Not even sure which one it is on my relay panel in the passenger side under the hood box. Mine does not look exactly like pictures I’ve seen. Here is the configuration of my relay box shown.

With regards to checking the big fuse for the starter, what type and size fuse are they do I can get some spares? Do I just unbolt the fuse panel after a battery disconnect and then it’s reachable?

Thanks for all your help, but still needing more!
Not sure what you are trying to explain in this quote. Did the engine start? If you kept the old switch on the column and just connect the new switch to the harness, I don't see how putting the key in the ignition will start the engine unless you used a screwdriver to turn the new electrical switch to the start position.

Some BMW have a instrument that can test a key to see if it is still good. Perhaps you should look into this.
