2 times during a drive yesterday, my UltraGuage triggered a high Voltage alarm I have set to 15 Volts. I have had the vehicle since February of this year with 66k miles. I have put 12k miles on in 7 months to include two 2300 mile trips and have had not a single charging problem until now. At 78k miles the no charge on cold start and a few high Voltage events occurred in the past few days.

I will keep an eye on things until the regulator is replaced and will update once the regulator has been changed.

I now see that on these newer chassis vehicles there is not a good indicator for charging system problems.
I thought the same thing too. I guess 4X4/DSC/ABS means Alternator Fault lol

Keep us updated on your progress, I plan on rebuilding my alternator and take some detailed pictures to aid anyone in the future.

Anyone interested in a Voltage regulator, AutohausAZ current has the Valeo regulators on sale for a NO BRAINER $45 for the moment. This is the same regulator you would get from BMW for $125 online price.

You can get free shipping if your order is $75 or more. Get some oil filters because they are not easy to find for the V8 engines and toss something else in the order like a fan belt or idler pulley.

Not sure if and when I will get to this in the near future as I have a LOT of things to do before the weather turns too cold but I will update what I find when I pull the alternator and replace the regulator.

jfoj - I think one of your earlier posts said you needed a voltage regulator for a 220 amp Valeo alternator - is that correct? I'm interested because my 2010 35d has a 220 amp Valeo alternator voltage regulator part # 12317603775 - and $45 would be a great price. However, that part doesn't seem to be carried by AutohausAZ. Their web site only seems to have the 180 amp part # 12318510090 voltage regulator. I called them and they said they don't carry the 220 amp VR. I checked on RealOEM for a 2008 4.8 (which it looks like you have), and it seemed like you might have a 180 or a 220 amp alternator depending on your specific build. Perhaps I misunderstood your earlier post and a 180 amp VR is what you need?

Regards.
