I know exactly what you are talking about. I had an E60 M5 and replaced the vanos sensors just in time to the tune for $150ea. I think when it comes to parts like these it's a supply and demand factor. A part unique to a specific engine will inevitably cost more but you also have to remember the demographics of those who traditionally would own such a car are likely to be different than those buying an economy car like a Camry.

I bought two non working NOX sensors from a forum member and decided to tackle the check engine light today.



I plugged in the long cable NOX sensor in the front of the vehicle and before going to the back sensor to do the same I decided to turn on the car see if the check engine light would go away with just one and
BAM
it's gone!

what that means is that the code 009F1 DDE: CAN bus D can be turned off by just one NOX sensor plugged in. regardless of wheather the nox sensor works or not.

before calling it a day I decided it would be a good time to test out the hypothesis that both sensors are front/ back interchangeable.

so I went ahead and plugged in the short cable (rear) sensor in the front NOX port. and STILL the check engine light is gone.



that means that the computer does not care if it's the front sensor or the rear sensor plugged in in the front port at least. all it cares is that there is a sensor plugged in.

the next test would be to see if I could plug in the hard drive looking part of the sensor without the NOX sensor to see if the fault would go away. but upon pulling the PLUG looking connection from the hard drive part i found out that it's not a plug at all. pulling back the plug just reveals a bunch of cables going in.



so the only way to remove it would be to cut the cables. I did not feel like doing that. so someone else will have to test that idea. Haha

Unfortunately I didn't get the duramax NOX sensors but I still think there is a good ass chance they are the same damn part. Reading on wikipedia it suggest that the NOX sensor technology is quite complex (and costly to develop) and only one type of NOX sensor has been developed for automotive usage due to the very specific requirements needed to pass automotive standards it would be highly unlikely that the same company is making 2 different sensors for different car makers.

So I hope someone test that one out.

decided to install the "race Pipe " today

after removing the egr cooler I was left wit these two special connect hoses.



decided to just cut them off and join them with a left over hose from the egr exhaust cooler.

knife did not work so used a small hand saw.



this is what it looked like after



not pretty but it does not leak.

installing the racepipe I noticed that the new piece is about 2 mm around smaller in diameter than the egr valve. not sure if this will be a huge deal but I would have prefered if it would have been the same diameter. it probably restricts the flow somewhat. but the removed egr valve had a thing in the midle that restricted flow as well. so it should be about the same.

I just hope the turbo does not create some echo or something weird like that and blow up as im driving.

Yeah I never understood racepipes... For looks yeah, but that egr shaft isnt big. On my TDI before I updated intake manifolds, I cut the egr shaft and jb welded the hole shut, some used a big bolt with jbweld to seal it. Or a blanking plate and leave the egr shaft in.

Anyway it does look nice. Making me want to forget my ABC's. So annoying with this over sensitive crappy bmw software.

I just felt guilty having the parts sitting there as they (egr cooler and egr valve) are worth around 400 bucks used on ebay. since I have no use for them that's money sitting in parts that I can use for something else.

also i like the extra room in the engine bay 10 extra bolts removed is 10 extra bolts that gotta come off and back on every single time you have to do an alternator job or a belt tensioner or a thermostat. Im sure ill be back intere soon enough. the savings in labor over time add up.

also there is a spider web of vacum lines that now do nothing. it should make things easier when the vacum line leak situation presents itself as they are not cheap and rather labor intensive to replace.

took the car in to the bmw dealer for a FRM module fault and hilarity ensued when the tech came from the service area into the customer waiting area to inquire me what exactly is going on with the car and why there are so many components missing. )))))

he also commented on how he drove the car trough the service area and the car drives like a rocket.

the guy was just a bmw fanatic and wanted to find out how much power the car was putting out with the components removed. he even went as far as to suggest that i ship the ecu to a guy in canada to have the check engine light turned off. like what?

haha not only did they not give me any issues with the warranty work, they actually suggested that i tune out the chk engine light. LOL

both the tech and the service advisor where shock awed at the car ended up having a nice FAN conversation over coffee in the wating area...they just gave me a thumbs up and cleared the frm fault. said second time it comes up they can replace the unit under warranty.

I don't know about if x5d uses the same transmission as petrol x5. There's a guy in atalanta that can code and reflash modules.
I'm taking mine to have my footwell module and transmission reflash.

i did have the ecu tuned. i just didn't tell the dealer that detail.

Update:

I ended up reinstalling the egr valve as i did not like the racepipe and the sound it was making. smaller diameter does not make any sense.

upon installing the egr valve i got limp mode on the high way a few times. turns out the egr cooler outlet port is not that simple to block off.

had to go and purchase a copper test pipe from home depot and proceed to clamp it in extremely tight with a clamp. after multiple test under water to make sure the outlet was perfectly sealed i was able to get it to be completely shut.

I wonder how many other boost leaks there are in the system. thinking of hooking up a vacuum to the intake to see if there is any other leaks.

Quick question on the low pressure EGR. I'm assuming you deleted it, since the downpipe no longer has anywhere for it to connect. How did you blank off the other end? (Intake end)

And I'm curious about your issue with the main EGR race pipe, as I plan to delete both EGR, the dpf, and the swirl flaps.
