Appreciate both of you taking the time to flesh out the issue for the OP and others...

Yes, thank you all.

I'm reading all of your posts while waiting on my replacement code reader.

Interestingly, the next day everything seemed to work normally again. Its going to remain parked till I get my reader and see what codes it may be holding.

Another difficulty I imagine is finding someone to do the work. Sure, th valve body can be worked on by a specialist and that's probably highly recommended even but if you have no desire or ability to change the valve body or solenoids or sleeves or bridge seal, who's going to do it? Not saying there's no one but I don't think my dealer would have any interest and I'm doubtful my independent would either. The default solution to transmission problems in these vehicles is total replacement. At 156k, you have me worried. I guess I need a list of stuff.

The sleeves/ seals and solenoids are pretty easy as you don't actually have to open the valve body (the valve body has it's own bolts that hold it together and it detaches as a complete unit) to change them out so anyone who is competent to do the oil change will have no problem doing the solenoids/seals.

Do a search on YouTube and you will find quite a few videos on it, even if your not going to do the work yourself, it's good insurance to know what is going on as with that level of knowledge, you are much less likely to get taken advantage of by unscrupulous mechanics.

I purchased our current E90 a few years ago with a "bad transmission". I send the codes to ZF and they replied and recommended filter, sleeves and pan replacement first. If that did not fix they said solenoids. He said that procedure fixes 90% of the issues the 6HP has. And then goes on that worst case it could be valve body or bushings.

Proper troubleshooting is difficult with parts under the car and inside a pan full of expensive fluid which is time consuming to re-fill. There is also risk with damaging the valve body or electronics by removing them multiple times. There also is the theory that the solenoids wear out over time so you may as well just change them when you change the sleeves, filter and pan. Solenoids have tiny filters inside them that also could get clogged over time.

If you want to contact ZF go here. https://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/m...-inquiries.jsp

That corroborates what I've been learning about the 6hp. I just don't want to mess with it twice so I'm doing everything accessible from below at once. Best course of action will be dictated by your tolerance of possibly having to go back in for the solenoids or valve body (the separator plate also wears out inside the VB and is part of a rebuild).

Alright got my scanner and pulled the codes.... and there's a lot.

Here are the ones that seem most likely related to the issues I'm experiencing:

- A0B1 CAS: Input, selector-lever position, implausible.
- A0B2 CAS: Supply terminal 30E/30L
- D907 CAS: K-CAN communication fault?
- 507B EGS: Parking-gear sensors implausible
- A82E GWS: Interlock E faulty
- A834 GWS: Interlock system: interlock, one-touch control, rear, faulty
- 6DDB DSC: EMF: interface
- 6DDC DSC: EMF inertface: Parking brake button or line faulty
- 6EC4 DSC: steering-angle sensor, adjustment?
- 55D0 Message (steering wheel angle, 0xC4) error receiver VTG, transmitter DSC?

FYI, I haven't cleared the codes in prob over a year. Not sure how many are still issues and/or relevant. Meanwhile I started looking up some of these codes and reading threads explaining them. There's definitely a lot to digest.

For my scanner, I can see the mileage (in KM) of when the issue last occurred. That way I can focus on the most recent code. If your scanner does not do that, clear the codes, drive around and see what comes back.

^ Giood advice.

Also keep in mind that a problem it’s lo voltage can result in a slew of messages related to implausable, comm issues, etc. So it may seem like 6 bad things it could be a old low voltage issue when it was jumped.

Reset them all, see hat returns.

I would do as Ard mentioned and if the codes come back I would check your transmission wiring harness and all of ground straps on the vehicle as well as pick yourself up a cigarette lighter voltmeter so you can monitor the voltage as you drive. With that many codes, I think you have an electrical gremlin in there somewhere
