cat converter p0420 p0430 misfire p0300 p0301 injector p0202 disa
The obd fusion report is Diagnostic Report 2020-08-09.pdf. I installed all new plugs and I swapped all coils and the code remained the same. The rpm does kick down when unplugging each coil. The electrical plugs are pushed on coils tight as well. Im almost positive it cant be the plugs or coils. I did search first and thanks for the help! *I just got back from the dealership(not BMW) that sold it to me. They claim it needs an ignition coil and spark plug in cylinder one. Like stated above I changed plugs and leap frogged all the coils already. (#1 coil is in #5 now. still showing #1 misfire.) They want $325. to fix it lol. They also said I have a hole in my muffler. Well the shop called and said theyre done doing nothing to it. Its still broke and coming home. I wouldnt let them replace the coil pack and plugs I already swapped and replaced.
Does my obd report have any clues? Please and Thank you. |

Sorry, thought someone would reply.
I cant look at the PDFs, but some thoughts.... If something is off with the Air/Fuel mixture (aka AFR) then you can have a VERY rich mixture. (How is the exhaust around the tailpipes? Black and sooty, speckles?). This will cause the cats to be overwhelmed- and the DME will see the pre and post cat O2 readings and declare ‘the cat is bad’. IN FACT, (and this especially true with the S62s) there were a TON of cats that BMW replaced under the federal warranty that were fine. Issues were sluggish vanes actuators And or intake air leaks leading to rich Running. Also, when the AFR is whacked, you will get misfires. Too rich OR too lean, it will misfire. Now, many say that the DME should adjust, and once it hits the end of the adjustment you will get a rich or lean code. Not always. If a car runs off on AFR but only for PART of the rpm map, it may never get to a limit. A classic is “runs fine around town, but once I take it on the highway it trips. A code after 100 miles”. Around town you are seeing the full rpm range, on the highway it is basically at idle+.. Are you reading the full BMW codes? Or is that a generic reader?? Also, you will want to be able to live stream stuff like long and short term fuel trims. I think that may help. I really (really) suggest you carefully inspect every hose and fitting on AND UNDER the intake plenum. Doesn’t take much of a leak to whack out the balance. Pls confirm it is a 6cyl gasser too. There is some odd crap that can happen with the valvetrionic control actuator, wonder if that is involved Anyway, a few thoughts. Hopefully someone else chimes in. Oh, you know about www.newtis.info? Its like water...us fishes forget we are swimming in it. Figured I’d mention it. |

Hello there ard. You were exactly who I was hoping to see! Below is my OBD Fusion report in txt that I hope stayed readable.
It is a 2007 x5 3.0si regular gasoline I cant check for exhaust soot or vac leaks yet. Am I worthy of a smoke test I read about somewhere here? I could post a pic of the original plugs if that would help anything. It hesitates and has no power all the time . I had no CEL for awhile then it spit the p0420 and 430p and drove fine. About 100 miles after that came the p0300, 301, and 302 codes with the power loss I only drove this car about 480 miles since buying so most likely the problem started with the previous owner. driving the car is a bad idea. You can do real damage. If it is super rich (we dont know, im just tossing some WAGs) that can lead to cylinder damage, oil thinning, wear.
Quick Q: you are seeing misfires on a few cylinders as well as 'multiple cylinders', correct? Not just one, right? Any way for you to look at fuel trims with a streaming function? |

Got the x5 back. Did the homemade smoke test with a cigar and pump. Worked amazing. Here is the culprit so far...
![]() ![]() The plan is to smear a bunch of jb weld or something around the crack. No problems with that? Is it called the resonator? Last edited by brokenbim; 08-24-2020 at 05:43 PM. |

A nice fat bead of silicone sealant will fix that

Silicone is now applied to crack. Still have 301 code but the code did move to cylinder 4 when I swapped it out. The multiple misfire code is gone now.
I also figured I should check and clean the disa valve. considering motor does have 160,000 miles on it. I did check and clean the 2 vanos solenoids in the front of the motor also btw. Look what I found! This would have alot to do with misfires, cat codes, and the loud rattle that drives me nuts. I could put the flapper back on but it spins freely. (I cant see any hole where air flows through either...) Is this type completely sealed? Last edited by brokenbim; 08-12-2021 at 12:42 AM. |

FWIW...I think the car will run OK without that part on at all. It is just an air duct, not part if the 'metered' air (ie intake on the 'other' side of the maf.) I think. again, I dont have a gasser |

The resonator duct is between the MAF and throttle body, so it was causing the MAF to under report air, resulting in less fuel being injected, mixture problems, misfires, and likely the cat efficiency codes. The failed DISA valve is for torque boost and has no effect on misfires but it could could create a vacuum leak if it leaks where it attaches to the intake. If you don't want to replace it you could remove the loose/broken parts and reinstall.
