EGR Gas Codes

Hey Guys...

2013 X5 35d

Hoping someone can help point me in a direction. Started getting Engine Malfunction - Reduced Engine Power. The codes it is throwing is 004862, 004B81 & 0048DD. Looks to be an issue somewhere with the EGR gas flow.

Any common failures on these engines that would throw these codes?

I appreciate any help

Did you look up those codes? Any work yet?

Any mods? any other issues? Miles?

How long has it been driven with CELs on? Or has it been perfect then all of a sudden, codes and limp? (is it in limp mode??)

48DD is:

Charging pressure sensor, plausibility: Charge-air
pressure too high (not plausible in relation to
pressure before turbocharger and ambient pressure)

4862 - Air system, air to EGR mass flow, plausibility

4b81 Exhaust gas recirculation rate control, control deviation

Finally, are you doing the work and diagnosing, or just hoping for a lucky magic bullet and replace something??? Give us a sense of you capabilities here as it can help with responses.

Thanks for the reply.

I also found that bulletin and started with the smoke test. I put the smoke before the turbo charger for convenience... easier to get to... and I saw smoke coming out from under my intake on the right side of the motor (right side as you are looking at the engine). I pulled off the intake and saw that the seals were leaking.

I replace the seals and cleaned up some of the oil with a hose and dish soap.

I have had that manifold off many times for other issues...injector, CBU cleaning, glow plug, injector...ect. So I am kicking myself to tell you have I snapped off one of the intake bolts. Usually I just do these by feel but since I had new seals I grabbed the torgue wrench and read daNM as NM because some gunk was covering the "da".

In any case....the code is still there the car goes into reduced power along with a 004A14 glow plug control. I assume that the glow plug issue might be from my jostling something loose or the water I sprayed that side of the engine off with?

I replaced a glow plug controller on my old 335d (same engine) 6 years ago...I think they fail often. Just suspicious that I would get this code right after working down there.

As for the 4862 4B81...ect The service bulletin says to use ISTA do test the charge temp sensor. I have ISTA but I have never used any of the test plans or any real diagnostics. I am always worried about missing things up in there since I am not familiar with the program. I will probably snoop around in there with it tonight. Any links to vids or instruction on how to use the diagnostics?

thanks again for the help.

Did another smoke test last night. Again I put the smoke in just after the Air sensor and pressurized it about 5psi. The only place I saw smoke again as just under intake manifold on the driver side...same as before but a lot less with the new seals.

After just driving a couple days I was surprised at the amount of oil present again. Are there seals up in the flap system that are leaking. It looks like most of the oil in on the underside of the manifold itself. Is this normal?

Also...I found that some of the manifold studs seem bent a bit. I took a pic but I cannot figure out how to load on this forum.

I did the Charge Temp test in ISTA and it passed. I clean the Mass Air sensor with spray and drove it to work today. Limp mode almost the whole time. Now I am getting the 004521 and the 004B81 along with the Cylinder 6 glow plug 004A14.

I tested the glow plug last night and got 0.9 Ohms on Cylinder 6...I read it should be close to 1.

What would you guys try next? Thanks

Took it for a short ride and looks like the 4521 is gone...just the 4B81 and 48DD remain.

My charge air temperature sensor failed some years ago and put the vehicle on limp mode. I replaced it, the MAFS, and all of the other pressure and temperature sensors in the intake tract. Problem gone.
