Rear Wheel Hub Replacement

Hi

Need to replace the Rear Wheel Hub (Driver Side, e70), as two wheel nut threads are damaged beyond (safe) repair. Have seen a few videos and threads for replacing the Rear Wheel Bearing but there are some conflicting areas that I hope someone can shed some light....

1. I'm planning to replace the Hub and the Bearing; do I still need to first separate the existing Hub from the Bearing (I know this damages it but I'm replacing it anyway) or can I remove the whole piece releasing the 4 bearing carrier bolts? wondering if that is doable and if they will just move out the axle? (using a extractor/separator)

2. Do I need to remove the rear CV axle? e.g. can the Bearing holder bolts (4 bolts accessed from behind) be removed with the axle in place? It seems difficult but so is that doable with extensions?

Thanks for any help/input or if someone has seen a related procedure will be appreciated...

After removing the axle nut you can push the axle in far enough to get to the four E14 e-torx bolts using two wobble extensions and enough length to get a breaker bar into a good spot.

You probably get a little more room to work if you remove the hub first but as you won't have that luxury during reassembly I don't see why you would have to.

When I assemble rear bearing, I cut a slot in the end of the E14 bolts so I can spin the bolts in from the outside using a screw gun and a long flat blade.

You have to turn the hub and line up through a lug hole.

andrewwynn, thanks, this is very helpful !

-for the Axle Nut, I'm planning to use an Impact Wrench (650 ft-lb), hope it works
-when you say pushing the axle back, any suggestions? I saw a post where they used the old axle nut, inverted and flush with the axle end to hit back and avoid damaging threads

forgot to ask, I assume in addition to the brake disc, caliper, etc, there was the removal of the parking brake shoes and adjuster?

thx

Rear Wheel Hub Replacement

Spray some good penetrant like liquid wrench. I have a big rod I use with a BFH to get the axle out. If what doesn't work rent axle "puller" tool before you mushroom the axle.

Out of about ten axle out jobs I had two that took over 15 Ton of force to remove. I have tricks I built my own axle push tool from an old rotor.

The rest only took a few hits with 3# hammer.

You do have to remove the hand brake. There are plenty of YouTube.

The 650 should work no problem. Just chisel open the staked on portion.
