I suspect that BMW wants to bump the output of the v8 before they release the 3.0 turbo in the X5, or soon thereafter. The (true) output of the turbo is too close to the v8, so they'll need to do something to maintain a performance spread. Plus BMW will probably be boosting the turbo's output in a couple years. Yeah, progress is gooood!

I also seem to recall reading about a turbo v8 somewhere? Maybe for the "iS" version in a few years?

I have heard nothing about the 3.5L, has anyone actually heard they are going to do it? The new 3.0i is 270hp and isn't it brand new? Would you want a turbo on an suv?

I haven't heard anything about a twin turbo motor(335i) coming out for the X5. I don't want to spread any rumors. I was just thinking that it could come out since it has happen for the 335i. But if it does happen i wouldn't mind at all. At least i wouldn't have to worry about an aftermarket. Who knows, it might or might not happen.

The X5 would really benefit from it more than the 335i. Torque with the turbo jumps from about 225 to 300. At least that's what BMW rates it at. Some reviews have dynoed it from around 275 - 300 ft-lbs (and about the same HP) at the rear wheels, so speculation is that BMW's ratings are low by 5-10%. Anyway, IMHO a big heavy vehicle like the X5 needs the torque much more than the 3-series.

I haven't heard anything either - pure speculation, but consider BMW's past practices: The 3 Series coupe is the first to get the 3.5. Now the sedan has it. The 3 Sedan started with as a 328xi, now we're told the 3.5L will be available as a 335xi. It doesn't make sense that this motor won't carry over to the 530xi (making it a 535xi) as well as the X5. I guess time will tell.

On a related note, I'm still trying to understand why the 4.8L engine is in the X5 instead of the more powerful 5L engine from the 5 Series.

My guess is we will see a changeover to the 3.5L and the 5L (or whatever their actual displacements are) in the next year.

As for why would you want a turbo in an SUV? Firstly it's an SAV, which means it's not meant for off road use, so why not? What is the negative to a turbo in this vehicle that isn't a negative to it in the 3 series (335xi)? It is supposed to have good low end torque and plenty of HP (30 more than the 3.0, right?). I'm thinking it would be a good move, don't you?

?
Because X's are made in SC and the 5's are made in Germany. I doubt that BMW wants to add cost by shipping the engines to SC.

The 550 has a 4.8L AND NOT 5L (SAME ENGINE ONLY MODIFIED FOR X5)

It is quite common for the same engine to be rated at slightly different HP's in different cars (this 4.8L is rated 360 HP in the 550i and 350 HP in the X5), as the intake and exhaust systems affect HP, which are obviously different on different cars.

During a visit to the SC plant, when the Z3's were in production and the X5 was under raps, (they would not let us into that area) engines and transmissions were shipped from Germany. Is BMW now building engines in the US ?
