Question Steering Wheel Position Memory Didn't work

Anyone have this problem? I would set my driving seating/steering position where I needed it to be. When I would turn off the vehicle, the steering wheel would adjust down(!)making it more difficult rather than easier to get out of the vehicle! Took it to the dealer where the salesman witnessed this happening. After a few operations, for the first time, it started working correctly. One thing that he did do was actually insert the key into the dash...I have the convenience option--hadn't been doing that... so perhaps this was the "issue". It now works correctly when using either method. Have had the X5 on since 2/10/07...will update if this occurs again. Glitchy?? or needing some type of initialization?

I have the exact same issue with our new X5. Since delivery the steering wheel memory has not functioned properly - the wheel actually moves down instead of up when exiting the vehicle, and does not move back to the position stored in memory when entering.

I also have comfort access and usually don't put the key in the ignition. I just tried it now and turned the car on and off, but it did not correct the problem. Was there anything else that you did to fix this issue? Thx!

well, you may need to program it through the onboard computer, I have a MB AMG it used to work fine when I insert the key, but when using the keyless go, it does not, then I found that it was set to work only when the ignition key is in.

I have 4.8 but no comfort access. My problem is that steering wheel only adjusts back to last driving position 1 of every 4 tries. Other times it just remains at full up position.

The only thing that I can think of is that you need to perform your settings with the ignition on. I would go through the whole routine of inserting the key, setting your seat, wheel, mirror pos etc., store it in seat memory #1 or #2 (which I understand is independant of the last position setting that the vehicle will return to) put the car in drive, turn it off, get out of he car, lock it and then go unlock the vehicle to see if it acts the way it supposed to. The salesman himself wasn't sure how he "fixed it" . He made a reference to it being perhaps "glitchy".
My wife has been primarily driving the 5 so I can't tell you yet if it's been acting up--its only been a day since it was "fixed".This holiday weekend I'll be taking it on the 1st extended trip (albeit a short one-about 100 miles one-way) to Palm Springs. Geez, the 1st time in a while that I'm actually looking forward to driving; if you live in L.A. you'll know what I'm taking about--traffic out here SUCKS.
Will keep you updated. Good luck.
