Bro, you need to chill. Nobody is trashing your Pontiac or your X5. I own a 2000 X5 and I love it to death. However, it is an undeniable reality that the new X5 will be better than the current X5. Just because you personally think the new Bimmers are ugly relative to your old Bimmer doesn't it is so. You can't refute the fact that sales figures for the new 7 and 5 series have increased -- not declined -- over the previous generation models.

I recall E36 owners having the same reaction to the E46 when it came out in 1999. E36 owners cried bloody murder at the insanely ugly E46. What happened to those people? Do you think anyone would actually choose an E36 over an E46 now? The same thing will happen to all of our X5's. They will fade into history as a great but obsolete model.

Curiously, I haven't seen any posts about that here

This may be a difficult discipline to attempt, md, but I'd suggest taking the extended warranty money and putting it into a fund that'll make some money. These extended warranty companies are kinda shady, it's an insurance policy they are selling you, in effect. If you designate some decent yielding account as your 'extended warranty' you'd never have to worry about whether one of those suspect companies would cover you or not.

I'vw owned 10 BMW's over a 30 year period, and I have to say that the new designs (Z4, 5 series, 7 series, 8 series) have not "grown" on me. If the new X5 looks anything like the other "new" designs, then I'll probably end my 30 year love affair with BMW, and jump ship to Land Rover. They still drive like no other car/SAV, but I just can't get past the look of the Bangle & Co. designs.

JV: thanks for your comments...I still would do an Ext Warr if I keep our '01; either with WarrDirect or OneSource: both get great reveiws, have dough behind them, and seem substantial. I am aware of the pitfalls w/some previous deadbeat, poorly funded operations.

It isn't about the $, or a "seperate fund"; no boasting, but we have plenty of dough, otherwise I'd still be tied to the whipping post instead of earlyretiredBumDom.

I jes'have a feeling that a couple things are ready to let go, and I have not yet been able to arouse the local Stlr's "diagnostic abilities" for them to discern my concerns.
I have Orig Warr until early Sept and also Ext Maint, which also expires then...w/my luck, the crap will hit the fan about a week or month later.

My main concerns are shimmy with hard, high speed braking, continual slight coolant loss, new brakes and rotors, (though they won't "go" until after extMain ends),
a new "chirping sound from fan belt area on cold starts, etc. And, any thing slightly more than normal fizes is a couple grand, the price of a 3 year ext warr. from a privateer.

Apologies for the long post and jacking the arm wrestle thread on the guesstimate pics of the new X5.
BR,md

PS: Ya'll still thinking about making the run to CT on the
8-6 weekend?

Sho nuff! I decided to just get some spectator tix for that, and if you don't detour to NJ, feel free to drop in for grilled steaks and cold brew.

I have been thinking about the same things with my X5 as you have, md, around 60-70K and things begin to go south. Just had a less than satisfactory experience with my warranty, residual bitterness.

Far as this topic goes, I have been looking over the pics of the new designs and I hope BMW maintains the driving dynamics and more sport than utility aspect of the new X7. BMW owners seem to be a quite loyal bunch, but don't seem to be the minivan crowd. All told, I can't think of one vehicle that was outdone by a previous generation, unless we go back to the Mustang II and Charger 2.2, and as a general rule, there are improvements with new models, not setbacks.

OT,JV:
Still woiking on the Shed U ool for that run to CT;
hard to pass up cooping at the Daughter or Son's house
and seeing the Gdaughter on way up or, back. But, if I
make the run, we could hook up driving maybe, and
w/Juan...I too will do the Spec. tix if I go.

Agree w/you on the new gen is almost always better
than prev. gen, espc on the sports car/hot car side.

Hey, here's a cool pic of Washington Monument you
may not have seen...but, I am scared to fooking death
of lightning:

"After years of storm chasing Washington, D.C., I finally saw the Washington Monument struck by lightning -- and I got the photo to prove it!! I took the shot from the Jefferson Memorial, looking across the Tidal Basin. It was an absolutely impressive sight, to say the least. It is interesting that the monument was struck from the side, but there is an illuminated streamer coming off from the top of the monument. The storms briefly dropped heavy rain over the area, but were not severe in D.C. The photo was a timed exposure, 8 seconds at F6.3 with a digital Olympus camera.

On the topic of lightning safety, I was under cover of the Jefferson Memorial while photographing Friday night. At the time of the photo, the lightning had seemed quite distant (many miles away) and a light rain had just started to fall. I had started photographing the distant lightning illuminating the clouds behind the Monument while I was waiting for the storm to approach. Suddenly, the Washington Monument was struck without any other bolts having hit the nearby area (within a mile or so.) It was proof that lightning can strike well before the storm arrives and people should take cover when thunder is heard."

The 8 series is like 15 years old What does Bangle have to do with it ?
I know people with Disco's, Range's and Freelanders. A friend bought a brand new, fully loaded Range and after 1 week he discovered that the drivers door is f*cked...water coming in, doesn't close properly anymore etc... He goes back to the dealer and they order a new door for him. After 2 months, out of frustration, the dealer took the door off of a showroom model, painted it and installed on my buddies car. . Land Rover is, such as Rover, in very deep financial shit. I would never buy a car from a company that:
1. is known for their lousy QC and reliability
2. is almost bankrupt

Just my 2 cents.

Better in what way? Better to you, not better to me. I think the E39 5 series is 'better' than the E60.

Whether or not the sales figures are better doesn't make a difference to me -- the most important opinion to me is mine. That is why you shouldn't make blanket statements like you did in your first post.

BTW, I'm chillin' bro
