I use to love reading the motorcycle manuals that came with my Japanese motorcycles in the 1960's and 1970's.
Regardless, how can a company call a vehicle a "Sport Activity Vehicle" and then write the manual with language such as that? Might as well call it an "ISAV" - Incapable SAV.

Thank you, just went in the garage and found and tried it! I guess it seems disappointing, since in the '10 7 Series, the map changes automatically to night mode and then back to day mode...even if the headlights are not on!! I would be driving, using the map or Navi, and when dusk would appear, the map/navi screen would just automatically turn to a starry, night sky..regardless if my headlights were set to on, off or Auto. Very cool.

Kind of lame, that you have to manually do night and day mode for the E70. I guess though, there has to be some reasons for buying a $100k BMW 7 Sedan

Thanks again!

Just skip nav in your next X5 and buy a $200 Navigon GPS device...or most likely, any other small portable GPS. My Navigon did it and it was pretty cool.

The BMW Nav system is truly bad and not very well thought-out. I would have expected a $1,900 system to give three options for the view, (1) daytime, (2) night time, and (3) automatic.

It's pretty lame that a $100 Garmin is more accurate, more functional, and more feature-rich than BMW's.

That said, I personally don't care for the night views in GPS -- I prefer to leave it on daytime mode and turn-down the brightness at night.

No. I am not driving a $65k vehicle with an aftermarket screen plastered on my windshield, or mounted on my dash.

Then I guess you'll have to deal with the non-automatic day/night nav modes

100% agree Personally, I will not drive a $30k vehicle with an aftermarket screen plastered on my windshield!!!

I will agree that many aftermarket navis are great though. We keep one for our German and Swedish family members, so when they visit and want to go out on their own...they can use it! And unlike the BMW, that only offers now Spanish and I think French for the Navi...the Garmin has German and Swedish!!

The 5 and 7 Series do come standard with Automatic mode, and works flawlessly!

I think the 'USA' made models (X5, X6 and now X3) kind of get shafted in terms of options and features!!

The reason BMW does not have the roll up via remote (in the US at least) is due to liability issues. This is the same reason the top can not be raised on cabrio's via the remote like they can in non-NA markets.
It's probably also the reason you can open up the lift gate from your key fob or dash button...but not close it!

BTW, I've assigned the toggling of day/night modes to one of the shortcut keys, so switching back-n-forth is very quick and just 1 click.
