Exactly right... hence my comment ... "a petty chick term."

Can't you just....ignore it What happens if you get into a wreck and can't get to your phone for some reason. Ever watch that episode of The Office YouTube - The Office- Michael drives into a lake! where Michael follows the directions from the GPS and it directs him to drive a road that dead ends into a lake...and he does what he's told! Imagine if he'd left his cellphone in the trunk. At some point, common sense and differences of drivers security come into play.

Doesn't that defy the whole point of it? I'm more comfortable doing 80 driving down the highway looking at my screen nowadays than when I was in my 20's w/ a foldout map (remember the days of that being our only option) the same size as my interior and trying to remember which turn to take while flopping this huge sheet of paper around. I worked for a small construction company about 10yrs ago and we used mapbooks because GPS units we're as affordable as they are nowadays. It's much easier to find my way around glancing at the screen and/or listening to the car tell me when to turn than it is to flip pages in my lap while driving...stopping every 10 minutes in a 30,000lbs vehicle isn't exactly feasible and management would have my ass for how long I was taking.

Point is, these technologies are made to make out lives easier AND safer, but it's also takes common sense and discipline to operate them. IMHO, i'm a better driver still watching TV and doing 80mph on a roadtrip than some of the 16yr olds I see doing 30mph driving through my development or that 80yr old bag in the fastlane who doesn't know when to give up her drivers license in general.

Problem is we're so sue happy in the US and wanna tell everyone else what to do, but within our own comfort range. I can take my motorcycle to the track at MMP and hit triple digits on the straights. You on the otherhand may never want to ride a motorcycle and think they're absolutely dangerous and stupid. Ever sat in a Ford Focus then walked over to a Ferrari F40...not one stupid yellow !!CAUTION!! sticker in the Ferrari about airbags, seatbelts, etc. But that's another soapbox.

As I said, at some point, common sense and differences of drivers security come into play. I'm absolutely comfortable with watching TV on roadtrips or doing 140mph at the track, so please don't impose your driving insecurities on others. Let the mature individuals decide, not you or BMW.

wow m5James is on a roll!!

I have to agree with AVATT's thinking on this one... I modified my GMC navigation so I could watch movies while driving, and I have done it at times when there is traffic or on a long drive. Ohh and I had limo tint all around including my entire front windshield. I drove slow tho and was very cautious of my surroundings. Funny tho.. I have no accidents in the Denali and got in one in the X5 while using the I-drive..

BTW, the new 2010 Range Rover has a 2-way screen which allows the driver to see the navigation and normal screen while at the same time the passenger could be watching a movie on the same screen. I think thats a pretty cool feature.

I just kept reading through the thread and started rambling

Can't the BMW do split screen w/ the software upgrades? I've seen split screens on the M5/740 forums but I don't know if it was for allowing multiple inputs.

PS - On a side note, how is Dubai treating you? Long story, but I might get a chance to goto Abu Dhabi for a year.

lol yeah I could tell..

It's not split screen, but a dual-view screen. As far as I know BMW, doesn't have it but I may be wrong. I thought Range Rover was the first..

Dubai is good. I have been here for a year (summer in LA) and so far I have been enjoying it. There are some disadvantages here, but overall it is a wonderful place. Abu Dhabi is just as nice, maybe a little less foreigners and it is not really as "new" as Dubai but it is a good place. Will you be coming for work?

WHOA! How awesome is that! I meant split screen like 50/50 split w/ half showing the navi, half showing the movie...that's way better than I could have imagined. Sucks for the person in the back if they wanted to look up and see it, but oh well. Love that dash btw.

Yeah, it'd be for work...construction and transportation engineering. I've seen that it's nice and humid there, so it'll be like when I was in VA for the military Oh well, it'll be a great experience regardless if it pans out.

Yes, the E70 8.8 Screen with Nav is split screeen, about a 65/35 ratio. The BMW56 CAN I installed for the additional video sources also allows for a split or full screen option
