Tech Package Production Delay

Just got this email from my CA...am I the first here to be hearing this?

"After we ordered the X-5 BMW sent a notification that there is very limited availability with the Technology package as a whole, and specifically the Back up camera.
*
At this time they are saying your vehicle will be built the first week of January production. It may very well accelerate to December since it is a retail sold order. However, I can not promise that. I also can not promise if we were to modify the order that we will get it any sooner either"

Not that big a deal for me since the Tahoe doesn't go away until Jan 14, but just interesting that the X5 lines are experiencing these random supply chain delays.

I ordered my X5 in late Oct and haven't heard about any delays with the Tech package. My order is complete and in route. I wouldn't be surprised if your CA just said that to underpromise the delivery date since his/her dealership didn't have many allocations for orders.

I think the same backup cameras are used in all series. There is no special camera for X5. If your CA is right, BMW's all series will be behind schedule. Just does not make sense.

Mine is on order since 10/10 with the tech package. Still no build date. I hope it's not the case because I really want mine before Christmas.

That said it's not so unusual in the universe of Just In Time inventories for some glitch in the supply chain to hold things up. There are thousands of parts in a BMW, after all, and their supply base is likely spread all over the world. Just one supplier with a quality problem that propagates far enough into the chain before it's detected could cause a serious shortage.

Not in the auto industry, but I've been involved in cleaning up my share of supply chain disasters.

You should call up your CA. He/she should certainly have a production number and approx. build date by now. As stated, I ordered my X5 in late Oct. and it's completed and on its way. And, I didn't have a quick allocation as others have here.

I got tired of waiting too (I really wanted delivery before 1/1/10). So, I started tracking the inventories at ALL the near by dealers. Finally found a good match and said good bye to the order. I ended up with a few extra options but that was the best thing about it all This whole ordering thing is messed up. They keep us holding three-month orders while they keep replenishing their inventories with similar vehicles. If you want this year's diesel credit, sales tax deduction, and bonus accelerated business deduction, you've got to take delivery before 1/1/10.

That's not a bad idea. I guess my deposit would just carry over to the new deal if I took one out of inventory.

I know in CA dealers have to refund your deposit if you decide to cancel for any reason even after the car is built but can't say if that is the case in other states. Whether or not you end up buying from the same dealer, I think it would be a good idea to know your rights about the deposit money.

Another angle-Section 179...any educated input on this?

I was doing some research and it doesn't appear that the Section 179 Deduction changes taking place in 2010 would make a difference here...can anyone confirm that? It doesn't matter to me whether I claim the vehicle in 2009 or 2010 if that is correct. If I'm misinterpreting what I've read, then I would have a reason to find a vehicle prior to 1/01/10.

Hmm, you need to set your CA straight !!! I've just ordered 335xi last night, and got the production number before I walked out from the dealership !!! They have production numbers for each allocated slot, so it is quite possible they dont really have a slot and feeding you some bs...
