BTW my SA says that they recently had another 35d in with a busted Air Temp Sensor. And they did what all good BMW dealers do -- cleared the codes, ordered the part and sent the customer off with a busted Air Temp Sensor for the foreseeable future

I asked if he wanted me to come in tomorrow to have them check the codes and order the apporiate parts. And... I promise you I am not making this up... He told me that it would take SEVERAL hours to check the codes on our X5. So as long as it was running "OK", we should just wait to bring it in until next Wednesday when he could have a loaner for us. I guess those warning lights on the dash aren't all that important after all

You need a OBD II fault code checking device. They range in price from under $50 to well into the hundreds of $.

Checking the codes is easy. Understanding what they mean can be difficult because manufactures (e.g. BMW) can assign some of the codes as they wish. The information on these manufacture specific codes can take awhile to become 'public knowledge'. Basically you need a code look up table with information about about what a specific DTC code means for your specific vehicle. The more expensive code readers have this info built in. But even the expensive ones usually have a delay for the code info for newer models like the 35d.

I love that you can see all the part MFG dates...strange how this "Junction Box" code shows a part made in 2008 when everything else looks like it was made (or initialized) just in time for build (as they tout)....

very cool..now on to the engineering degree and cypher school to figure out WTF any of it means!!!

That's obviously the problem. jaaX3's 2010 X5 35d has a Junction Box with an ECU that is past it's "sell by" date

In my business people would die if they accessed info like this! I have delivered large yachts where engines have been two model years old, i'd hate to see when some of the smaller parts were mfg'd...

Just found it interesting..like the mfg dates on our tires.

I have an appt for Monday, but they said the next BMW loaner isn't available until Thursday. So they are offering me an Enterprise car.

Yeah, thats the part number. They had it overnighted but I also had a paint defect issue so the car stayed 3 days total.
