Check engine light? - Page 5

You guys are scaring me now... I do have 2008 though, so might not have the same "bad batch" sensor, but my CEL came on around 3 weeks ago, stayed for 10 mins and then went off after I've shutdown the car, re-tighten the fuel cap, and then restarted the car. It was ~30 miles after a fillup, and I was running the engine during fueling, so I just hope it was related to that and nothing more serious... I have a 1000-mile trip coming up in 2 weeks up to Killington VT, gotta have my X for transportation so that I can fit all the stuff wife packs for her and 2 girls

That being said, I have 2010 335xi on order (just finished build and is en-route to port), and there are LOTS (and I mean LOTS) of issues with the high pressure fuel pump on those. I mean some people change them every 3000 miles.... Dunno, now I am just to anxious about BMW reliability, perhaps need to go back to Honda

I've also had a check engine light on 2009 35d. 2 short months after purchase and 3,180 miles.

In this case, as with others, forced to schedule appointment for simple scan of fault code. Result?... Oh look, bad (I still laugh at this one) "KNOCK" Sensor. A "KNOCK" sensor in a diesel, uh... isn't combustion by compression the way this thing is suppose to work. Ah, wait... maybe you mean "NOX" sensor... Oh Yeah! That's what we meant. Now, wait for it.... wait... wait... Oh we don't have that, we'll have to order it, but not just order... wait... wait... wait for it... Oh you mean BACK ORDER, and let the waiting begin (Sorry Craig, had to add that offer that to let you know your not the exception, seems to be the norm!)

What? It's November already? Oh BTW, your part finally came in, drop by in a week or so and we'll drop her on in!

So... part installed, codes cleared... But I've yet to discover what part is...

We'll get into the "Engine Malfunction" light popping on for a few minutes then going away on while still driving. Due for first service, so we'll see what codes await if dealer feels like sharing. Maybe the latest discussion on code readers will drive me out to get one to see fore myself before dealer gets ahold of her.

Great information on the site, been extremely useful and hope I can offer some useful posts as well.

First rule of dealing with a BMW service department. ALWAYS demand that they provide you with EVERY part they replace. 1st it's educational for you. 2nd it keeps them honest

Thanks for the advice Funf, will do for any other work. Not being able to match up the part number doesn't really give me a warm fuzzy either.

Will also be interested to see if the "Engine Malfunction" light was recored and if the dealer will be able to recover, kind of puts me in the mood to go buy the code readers that you and others have been talking about.

Many auto parts places, like Autozone, will read the OBD-II code for free. Call around,

Thanks Penguin... It's only the geeky engineer in me that drives me to go get something will will allow me to read undecipherable codes and such!

Are these the same devices where all the items we're not shown on the instrument cluster can be seen (boost pressures, engine temp, turbo temp, etc...)?

Some things are available on the OBD-II buss, some others are not, e.g., I have something called a CarChip that can track coolant temperature, but not boost pressure, turbo temo, etc.

There are simple/cheap devices that can just read the codes, I believe they are called code readers. More expensive and complex Scanners can read real-time data from the buss and display time graphs of parameters, etc.

Check the Actron.com site for more info, or do a google on OBD-II Scanners.

Well my SA called and they are replacing 2 or the car's 6 injectors. They don't have the parts in stock, but he said he is ordering the parts from BMW overnight for delivery tomorrow morning. I will get another update tomorrow afternoon.

Let me guess.... the injectors for cylinders 2 and 6?

I wonder if a standard OBD II reader would have nailed this fault so well?

I'll ask questions next time I talk with him (last call was a voice mail).

When I took the car in this morning, I mentioned the 7 faults that I found. When he called he mentioned only the injectors. I just sent him an email with my screenshots of the faults, and asked him how they will be handled. We have a pretty good "service relationship" and I'm looking forward to his response.
